What model Mac are you using that requires this?

The First partition means: The partition at the top of the list when you are creating multiple partitions, and the 8GB should at the top of the list. When you boot, and the partitions mount, then the order should be alphabetical by the name you have given to the partitions. If you have partitioned it properly, then simply choose to install to the 8GB partition (ignore how it shows after the partitioning is completed, it should work OK)

Hope this helps you...

I have early iMac tray loading computer,I did that I named them Mac OS X and OS 9,but when I tried to install the OS X ,it's keeps saying ,failed to install not,the first 8GB's of hardrive, even when, I partition them as told, the drives icons still show the 8GB on the bottom icon not as was partition?

Make that partition a little smaller. The tech note on this issue states that the partition must be LESS than 8GB, and sometimes exactly 8GB is just too big. I have had this exact result, and now I make the '8GB', actually 7.7GB, and that will work fine.

sorry,to be such a pest, but,I tried, that, but, when I partitioned the drive,as untitled with 8GB& untitled 2 larger, but when I restarted, with install disk it shows up on desktop as untitled2 icon first ,and then the 8Gb untitled on next, why don't they appear as was partioned? and get the same error won't install one the 8 GB partition, because not on the first 8 GB's of hardrive??
want to install Mac OS 9 on the untitled 2,and OS X on the untitled on with 8 GB??

I have no idea. If you are doing OK with the actual partition process with Disk Utility, or probably Drive Setup, and choosing the make the first in the list less than 8GB, then you will be OK, ignore how the disks mount, the first one mounting is not necessarily the first partition physically. If you have created it correctly, then you are OK. Don't forget the 'less than 8GB' or you're wasting your time at this point. 7.7GB will work fine.

thank you,but still have same problem,Was wondering if I install OS 9 first on the larger partition, then use the startup control panel to upgrade to 9.2.2,the insert the Mac X disk then install it on the 8GB partition,or install both on same first8GB partition

Sorry, which problem was that?
Won't install on more than 8 GB, OR
Partitions showing incorrect lineup (which is not a problem)

OS 9 doesn't care if OS X is installed
OS X also doesn't care if OS 9 is installed.

You can try that installation, it should work just fine. OS 9 can be installed on any partition with enough space. On your computer, you have to install OS X on the small partition. If OS X install still warns you that the partition is too big, then you have to make it smaller. 7.7GB should be good, but you might have to try 7GB instead. That should work. Do you have enough memory installed. OS X must have 128MB, If you can max this iMac out at 512MB, that's even better.

Yes,I installed 256 MB of memory,so what you recomend? erase the the hardrive ,with the OS9 install disk ,or use the OS X drive setup to partition the drive ,make the partion a little bit under 8GB,and if it works, the restart with the OS 9 CD to install the OS 9 to the other larger partition?is possibe?

Yes, that should work OK
I do prefer the OS X Disk Utility, as it's simpler to setup the size of the partitions. Make the first partition 7.5 GB, that should work.

so,your saying it dosen't matter what i install .first? OS X O or Mac 9,as long as I install Mac OS X on the smaller partition??
DeltaMac - Aug 21, 2005 - 9:01 pm

Yes, it doesn't matter which you install first.
However, in my experience, I usually install OS 9 first. OS 9 does not care about the size of the partition. OS X must be installed on that smaller partition.

Thank you for your help, got it and running in OS X,But i had trouble with Mac OS X disk utitily,so I just loaded my Mac OS 9 disk then partition it,as you, just a bit smaller than 8 gb first partition, then,i restarted w/Mac OS x installer, and no! problems,Just wondering? now about installing OS 9,on the desktop I got untitled-1 & untitled_2 and a folder ,(called desktop for (Mac OS 9) so,which one I install in ??

Don't install OS 9 in a folder, choose the hard drive. You will have the best results if you let it install as it wants to. The OS 9 System Folder is normally i the root directory of the drive. (that can be whichever volume you want to choose to install)

Sounds like a good way to think. Install the OS 9 on the larger partition.

DeltaMac - Aug 24, 2005 - 9:39 pm
image
image
Yes, you need to download and install the firmware update for your iMac
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60384
This might be a catch-22 for you. You must boot into OS 9, running on the hard drive. to run the update.

Let me know how it goes.

I'm glad you got your system sorted out. The link for firmware update for your system is the correct one for the latest firmware. You should verify that is what you have. It may have been updated in the past, but you should still check it out.
