TICKET ARCHIVE -> Password Not Working With Any Apps.

This started happening about 4 or 5 weeks ago, but I thought it was only for Onyx, but now every app I have (other then logging in and stuff) won't work at all with my password..

I've tried reparing permissions, but it didn't seem to do any good.

I don't understand why it doesn't work, since I can file share just fine with it on other pcs and such.

HI Clay :-)

My suggestion is to change the password. To do this you must be the Administrator.

Open System Preferences and click the Accounts icon bottom left of that window. When the Accounts window appears click the Password button. If the lock icon bottom left of that window is in the locked position, click it once, a dialog box will appear and ask for the present password. Now, click
the Change Password button and follow the instructions.

Try that and see if it corrects the problem. Also, even thought Repairing Permmissions didn't do the trick before, run it anytime you make a major change like a password. It can keep your Mac running stable!

I tried that just a bit ago and repaired permissions, but it still seems to do the same thing. :s

I don't know why it happened and I thought the major update would fix it, but apparently not.

HI Clay,

Hello! Clay... try going to System Preferences>Sharing. Turn off the Personal File Sharing, close System Preferences and try to launch an application... see if that helps any.

Could you please post back with which Mac OS X you are running??? It helps to narrow down troubleshooting ideas!!!

HI Clay,

I just found the following on the Apple Support page... maybe it will help..

Automatic login could fail after you reset your account password by using a Mac OS X Install or Restore CD's Reset Password feature.

Enter your new password when the Login window appears, then follow these steps:

Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 Tiger

From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Accounts.
Click Login Options. If it is dimmed ("grayed out"), you probably need to authenticate—click the lock icon at the bottom of the window.
Deselect the "Automatically log in as" option.
Close the System Preferences window.
Open System Preferences again, and go back to Accounts preferences.
Click Login Options again.
Enable the "Automatically log in as" option.
Select the account to automatically log in as.
Enter your password, then click OK.

Thanks a lot, that seems to be the answer, but another odd problem. It says my OS X install disc 1 (or 2) can't be used as a restore or start up disc. And OS X disc two has nothing on really.

Oh you dear! You are no trouble... that's what we are here for... to help :-)

Clay, you said your restore disc can't be used as a restore or startup disc... why????? And yes, it's disk 1 that is the restore disc.

Have you tried holding down the "C" key while pushing the Power button at the same time.. hold down the C key until the Apple logo appears????

You can "trouble" me anytime.

Well, it gives me this whenever I try to restart from OS X CD.

When I try to hold down C while starting it up, it takes me to firmware, so I type in boot from cd. Then it shows a sign instead of the apple logo (looks like the no smoking sign) and never boots up.

HI Clay,

At this point, my suggestion is to take your Mac in for repair. Without the startup disc working properly, you really do not have much choice unless you wish to purchase a disc repair like DiskWarrior (www.alsoft.com) or
TechToolPro4 (www.micromat.com)... If it were me, I'd take the computer in for repair. Then, buy at least one of the disc repair programs to keep on hand.

(Sorry for replying to this so late.)


I'd take it in for a repair, but my warranty just expired a few months ago and I really don't have any money to spend on stuff right now. Know any free disk repairs or something? If not, that's ok. Just annoying now because I can't even network any longer. :s

I'm sorry for replying again, but something interesting happened.

I got the disk to actually go in and reset the password, and then repaired permissions from the disk, and then again when i started it up. And now It's still doing the same as it was before. :s Not only that, every app I open is asking me for a keychain password, which I'm pretty sure about, and none of them work.


Maybe I should stay way from computers in general. >_>';

HI Clay,

Don't give up! LOL You have manna from heaven... you said you got the system disk to boot the Mac and you ran Disk Utility to Repair Permissions. That is an excellent sign! Did you by chance use Disk Utility to Verify the disk using First Aid?
If not, boot the Mac from the system disk again by holding down the C key til the Apple log appears. The desktop will eventually pop up and you'll see the Installer. Quit the Installer. Now, go to the Utilties in the Menu at the top of your screen. Click Utilites>Disk Utility. When Disk Utility opens, select your MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, then click "First Aid" at the top. Takes about 2 minutes to run if that. It will give you a report. If it finds errors or damage to the internal disk, write down what the report says. Then click "Repair"... Disk Utility will then try to Repair the drive itself. This is the Mac's FREE disk utility program and it ROCKS. It can't do everything that DiskWarrior or TechToolPro4 can, but it can sure tell you whether or not your drive is ok or in trouble. Now, when that is done running, while you have Disk Utility open, click the drive name just above MacintoshHD. Example, I think mine is a Toshiba..... select that, then look down on the right side where it says: SMART Status: Verified. If it doesn't say VERIFIED, the drive is need of repair. Most of the time Clay, Disk Utility can fix most errors. The SMART Status is Apple's way of finding out bad the drive actually is.

I hope something has helped.... heaven knows you have tried. Regarding Keychain. I suggest you go to Apple support/discussions. Unfortunately, you are not the only person with issues with it. I NEVER use it.

One quick fix that might work but don't hold your breath.
go to: MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences and locate this file: com.apple.keychainaccess.plist Drag that file to the Trash, then empty the Trash. (plist) <-- preference files can get corrupted and keep applications from running properly). Your Mac will create a new plist file for you.

Another place to search for help with something is Google.
Launch Google if you can, type in Keychain and your Mac OS.
You'll get hits to follow and read. Also, I just found on the Apple site a macro for Keychain you might use:

That's about a 3 minute download on dial up... that little utility can keep Keychain working properly.

Hang in... and do not give up... you have tons of support here and at Apple. Also, www.macfixit.com www.versiontracker.com www.machome.com www.macworld.com
Those are all tried and true sites for Mac troubleshooting !!

Thanks a lot for your advice, and I tried most of that (Minus the keychain which I did a bit later) Then I decided to reinstall the OS with current profiles and files and such, and it works fine now. I'm just gonna try and not mess with password settings anymore. >>';
