TICKET ARCHIVE -> Pbs Fills Processor

On all but one of the accounts on my G4 iMac (OSX10.3) the pasteboard server (process pbs) fills up the processor. About half of CPU is used by pbs, and half by the system, and other applications hang.

Killing pbs removes the problem, but also the ability to copy/paste.

Does anyone know what's going on? And how to stop the problem?

Hi! My name is Dale and I'll try to help you.

Here is a link to a similar issue that could help
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...41213142116603

What version of OS X are your using 10.3.?
Have you tried downloading and installing the latest Combined Updater for 10.3? This has been known to frequently fix annoying issues that happen with OS X and is worth the try.

How much memory do you have installed. If a small size (256 MB or less) you could consider adding more memory.
Try repairing permissions using Disk Utility.

come back with your results or any other questions!

Hi Dale,
Thanks for your swift response.

I've been keeping in touch with the continuous flow of updates through 'software update'. Would installing the combined update addd anything new? (I'll this tonight anyway).

I'll add some memory soon, as that was planned to be done anyway, but I'd like things to work properly before I start doing anything to the hardware.

I can kill pbs and restart it, and problem returns.
Tried permissions a few times already, no change.

The strange thing is that for one account (luckily my own) the problem is not there. I made a brand new account just to check, and the problem is there too.

Do you know of library files or caches used by pbs that I might remove?

Thanks for your help, and best regards,
Mathijs.

The combined updater does not add anything new to your system, but doing the install of the combined updater, even on top of the same version you may have already installed, is well known in these tech support areas to fix minor annoying problems that crop up with OS X, and is worth the try.

Depending on the range of software and how you use it, 256 MB memory or less, can cause your system with OS X to struggle, and can cause slowdowns, and general 'glitchiness' that can be difficult to assess. I have seen this a number of times as a service tech. If you have that small amount of memory, perhaps you should make it a priority.

You may find that one of the cache-clearing system utilities, like YASU, or CockTail, or Xupport, or Maintain, or OnyX, or any of a few dozen others that mostly perform similar tasks, might be helpful to you. You can download any of these from versiontracker.com

You may find more answers to your question about the pasteboard server, and caches if you post a question in the relevant area on the main site here.
