hey, my PC finally crapped out so i yanked the HD and got an external USB 2.0 enclosure. I am buyng a new 15" powerbook in a few days and wanted to amke sure i could access all my files. The hd has no OS installed on it, it is just files (Mp3's, movies, word docs, other cross platform files). When i tryed to plug the HD into a mac running 10.3 at a lab on campus it said "you have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OSX can read". I need these files and burning tons of cd's (its a 120 gig) and tranfering sounds horrible. What do i need, software, hardware, what? help!

If the hard drive is formatted with NTFS, that could explain the problem. You should try this drive with a Mac running a version higher than 10.3, as better support for NTFS volumes comes in after about 10.3.4, I think. Keep in mind that you won't be able to modify or add any files on this drive from the Mac, as you cannot write to the drive in any way. If you don't get any results on any Mac, then you may only have one choice - move this drive to a PC, with a DVD burner, you will need much fewer disks that way. 5 or 6 CDs will fit on one DVD.

Or - you can copy all the files to another drive, and reformat this one as a FAT32 volume, copy all files back, and then the drive will work as you need to.

Hope this helps
