Ok I have a bit of a problem. I just downloaded a movie from isohunt.com onto my p.c which I want to send to my macosx. However it is not in avi, mpeg it is in something called iso. I have no idea what that is or how I can play it but it has a picture of a dvd over it. I tried using winzip and it sort of let me get out the one vob file in it but when it tried to play on realplayer it said that it needed more softwear and to click there to access that softwear I clicked there and they said there was no softwear to support it at that time. SO i playe dit without it and there was no sound and it was only 3 minutes and 50 seconds long. I think that the computer thinks that I have a dvd on this comp but it for some reason cant play it so what should I do to get into avi or some kind of playable format(currently its on the p.c)

Max,

I'm wondering if this is really a mac tech question (!)... but anyway...

What you have is a DVD disk copy file. A sort of photograph of a DVD if you get my drift. the file is designed to be dropped on a DVD burning application which will create an exact copy of the DVD the file was created from.

In other words, you need dvd burning software to handle this file.

The idea is that you burn a DVD from this file and watch the movie on a dvd player (or computer if it has a dvd drive).

There are probably ways of converting this file to avi, etc but you will need the right software.

I am getting into dangerous territory here as I suspect this is essentially an illegal copy of a dvd and so I cannot be seen to be supporting this activity. If you must pursue this further may I suggest you look to an appropriate forum?

If your mac has a dvd burner then you will have more luck with the file on that computer.

Feel free to get back to me on this but bare in mind this is a mac support area (not pc!) and the legalities relating to the file you wish to use!

regards

Tom

thanks for using macosx.com

ok hey tom yeah i guess technically it is a pc question. And so you dont get in trouble im gonna say that the movie that i downloaded is a legally posted copy of Math Teachings 101. You see I have roxio on my pc and it is telling me that I have to use a cd-r instead of a dvd-r will it still work if burn it onto a cd=r disk

Max,

the answer is "possibly". If the ISO file is bigger than 700MB or so then it just wont fit onto the disk! Also bare in mind that the contents will be in a DVD movie format and if your computer does not have a DVD drive then its likely it wont have DVD movie playing software. I am not sure if a DVD player would read the disk if burnt to a CD.

Quite frankly, if you want to make dvd's then you need a dvd burner (!)

There may be software out there that can convert what you have to VCD (a sort of DVD but on CD - a format adopted in asia). Or even to convert to some computer format (like avi etc) but I really can't tell you where to get this software because I don't know. I'm a Mac Guru and know as much about microsoft PC freeware as I do about the economic climate in Iceland.

A quick google for "ISO to AVI" threw this up ...

(Your not clipskid are you?)

where would we be without google!

That last link looks a bit like Macosx.com for PC too where you might find better answers to you PC questions.

Hope thats some help and good luck with your mission.
