Oftentimes, when I go to open a PDF file, it doesn't open. Sometimes it does and I can't figure out why it does sometimes and not other times. Does anyone have any idea why that might be? Is there something I might watch for when it opens and when it doesn't open? I can save an Apple document as a PDF file.
In my application folder, I have a folder that say Adobe Reader 7.0.5. Inside that folder are two other pieces. One say Adobe Reader 7.0.5 and has a red and white icon next to it. The other piece says ReadMe. html.
I have an eMac 10.3.9.
I am often coming across PDF files I would like to open. If anyone knows something that might help me, I would appreciate you letting me know.
Thanks,
Ragnes

Hi Ragnes,
You can open PDF files, using either Adobe Acrobat Reader, or Preview.
What do you use when you open PDF files? Does automatically Preview open, or Adobe Reader?
Thanks & Regards,

I just tried opening a couple PDF files that were on my desk top. They both opened using Preview. Does that give you any clues as to what the problem may be?
Thanks,
Ragnes

Ragnes,
Try holding down the control key (ctrl or strg on some computers) and then click on the PDF file once. Then from the menu that appears, click "Get Info" (4th one down). In the window that appears, you will see a place called "Open with". Click it and then click on the menu, where it right now says "Preview". Look in the list and see if you can find "Adobe Reader" or "Acrobat Reader". Click it and then close the window. Open the PDF file again, and then see if it works. What we just did was, assigning a different application to PDF files in the Finder.
Hope this helps,
Ferdinand

Ferdinant, this did help. I was waiting to reply to see if I could be more specific in my response, but I'm not sure how. The PDF files are opening more often now, although still not 100% of the time. If you have other ideas, I'm open to suggestions. Otherwise, I'm glad for the improvement. Thanks for your help.

I am out of ideas. All I can do is recommend the basics, like repair disk permissions, disk etc...
Though I'm happy that it at least improved a bit.

Ferdinand, I am happy to report that things are still improved with the PDF files. When you say you can now only recommend the basics like repair disk permissions, do you mean Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of the applications? Or do you mean something else?
Thanks,
Becky

Hi Becky,
Yes, I meant Disk Utility. You are familiar with using it? If yes, did you already try to Repair Permissions?

I just tried it this morning. It'll take me a little while to see if it's working any better. Carolyn (also from macosx) walked me through it. It's easy so I can do it every week now.
Thanks for all your help.

Hello,
I am on vacation for two weeks, till the 6th of August. I wont be checking macosx.com, or if only once or twice at the most. Please go to another tech or visit the forums in the mean time. If its urgent, you can always e-mail me.
Thanks a lot,
