Hi.

I wanna buy a new Apple laptop. However, I'm not sure which one should fit my needs.
How's the performance of the Macbook's graphic card? Will I be able to plug it into a 24'' display with a reasonable resolution?

Thnk you very much

Sure. One of my colleagues uses her MacBook to drive a 23" Apple Cinema Display at full resolution. However, I'll leave your question open for other techs to address as well with their experiences.

Thanks for your quick reply!
Moreover, how does the amount of ram influences the graphics performance? I have a Java application that works with Java2D and Swing, and to be honest I don't really know how much a graphic card would influence its performance.

Greetings....

You can drive the Apple 23" display with just the macbook. However keep this in mind:

The macbook uses shared video ram, meaning that it takes the system memory and grabs upto 188MB of it to use as video ram. That being said there are some things you can do the maximize your video.

1) install all 4GB
2) install them in matched pairs (2x2gb)
3) when running really high powered application do these two things:
a) only run that application unless it uses a small amount of memory
b) run with the lid closed, this will allow the video card to devote all resources to the external display.

If your really going to do a log of graphics and memory intensive applications then go for the bottom end macbook pro. This way you will get a dedicated video card.

Take care
