i am using a laser printer, but would like to use a color printer ALSO with a scanner. so far nothing i've tried worked. do you know the reason

It depends what you did try before asking the question 
One thing working really great is that you buy a new Parallel Port card from a computer store and install/configure it so you will have a new LPT2 in your computer. Then you can plug your 2 peripherals on your computer at the same time... It works really great!
