Anyone know what this is? All of a sudden all my permissions are screwed, I can't access my applications folder without authentication, I have run repair permissions to no avail, any help would be nice! Thanks much. Mac OS 10.4.2 When I use get info to change permissions, it gives me the -36 error.

The -36 error is fairly serious -
I/O error (bummers) (The error list actually shows with the word 'bummers')

some other explanation -
"This file is having difficulty while either reading from the drive or writing to the drive. The file may have been improperly written data to the drive or the hard drive or disk may be damaged. This is almost always indicative of a media error (hard error on the disk). Sometimes (rarely) it is transient.
Solutions: Try copying the file to another drive. Use a disk recovery software, such as Disk First Aid to examine the disk. You can try rebooting with all extensions off. Once in a while this will allow you to read the data. The file in question should be restored from a backup that was stored on a differnt disk. Regular backups can reduce the time to recover from this error."

Run a Repair Disk from the Disk Utility while booted to the Tiger installer DVD. You can get to this from the Utilities menu at the first screen when booted to the Tiger DVD.
You may need to erase the hard drive to clear this problem, as it's sometimes a bad block that has not been caught by the hard drive's internal maintenance.
Let me know how it goes...

Hi Dale, thanks for taking my question. In all fairness my setup is a real clusterfuck, I am hoping macosx.com will censor that... anyhoo... I have a ata 133 PCI card hooked up running softraid, so I am beginning to wonder if that has to do with it. Last I have tried disk warrior, and install cd repairs with no luck. I have a disk program i/0 checker, and all is well... soooo it's gotta be something else. Actually if it may help.. I do feel it's something I did... I think I changed the permissions as root user and it warned me it couldn't be undone.. so maybe that's it. Not sure.. I hate to do a archive and install but I guess I will start there. Let me know if oyu have any other ideas.
