I seem to be experiencing a host of persistent annoying problems which all seem to have occurred since I loaded 10.4 on my Mac (G4 iMac Flat panel now running 10.4.1). The problems are:

1. The computer rarely closes down properly (i.e. all the apps close but the desktop remains) and I have to press the off button.

2. Secure empty trash often crashes (it starts but fails to complete the operation and I have to reboot and try again)

3. My iPod still shows the "Do not disconnect" message despite showing as updated on iTunes and this continues after I've 'ejected' the device and closed down iTunes. Moreover, the iPod does not update properly.

4. Microsoft Office works very slowly

5. There is a tendancy for apps to crash

6. I seem to be losing hard disk space quickly despite not having created big files or downloading software - I lost over 400mb a couple of days ago for no apparent reason. I now spend a lot of time deleting unnecessary software and files but I'm running out of options (I've already deleted several albums from iTunes and don't want to lose anymore).

Is there anything I can do?

Martyn,
Have you run disk utility and used the "Repair Permissions" feature? That is where I would begin. Secondly, I'd buy a copy of Cocktail (available on Versiontracker.com) and run all of its utilities found by clicking the "Pilot" button.

Many bizarre problems are fixed by Cocktail as it runs basic UNIX maintenance tasks normally run automatically by the system in the wee hours of the night... when most machines have been turned off... thus preventing those tasks from running.

Hi Matt

Many thanks for your speedy reply - I'm running the disk utility Repair Permissions now (and I'll leave my Mac on all night - is it alright if it's on Sleep mode?).

I'm encountering another problem (probably related to the above). I didn't mention in my list that I've been having problems with the Software Update feature and today I've been downloading iSync update 2.1 (which seems to have worked okay) and OS X Update 10.4.2 (which I was hoping might solve some of the problems I've been having). Software update was running okay today but has got stuck on Optimizing System Performance for over an hour now - what can I do which will not damage this important update?

Thanks again

Martyn

Martyn,
Launch Activity Monitor (in the utilities folder) and select "My Processes." If the Finder is hung, it'll show up here. Force quit by selecting Finder then click the "Stop" button. In the dialog box, click on "Force Quit."

The other option is to press and hold the power button to force it to shut down. I had to perform this on a G4 DP we have at work after running the 10.4.2 updater... Software update was acting weird, too... It seems to be running just fine now.

Matt
