Hi...

I am running Leopard on my iMac G5. For the longest time I was using Photoshop 7 with no problems. Then one day for no reason at all, I opened it (nothing else was opened) and it crashed upon starting up. I continued to try and try and same problem. I then went and bought Photoshop CS3 hoping that the newer version would solve my problem and alas, same problem. I installed it and the minute I activated it and was ready to use the problem it crashes. I have repaired my permissions and have about 12 GB free on my hard drive. I don't know what to do and am freaking out. If you could plllleeeeeeeassssseeeee help I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much!!!!!!!!

Hi, fellow designer here. Have you downloaded all updates for your computer and for your software? There are known issues between Leopard and CS3, and Adobe says it's fully up to date so it's an Apple software update thing. Apple is notoriously slow in this regard.

Let me know if the updates don't work if you haven't performed them already.

Hi! Thank you for your reply. I have gone and performed all the updates on my Mac and also checked the permissions. I still can not get it to work. It shows up and right as it's about to finish it's loading and let me use the program it crashes. It has to be something with my Mac, something not related to photoshop. I am going insane trying to figure out what it is. I know Leopard has caused some trouble, but photoshop 7 was working great with Leopard until recently and not CS3. I am ready to go out and just buy a new Mac...but I hate to do that if I don't have to.

I greatly appreciate any and all of your help. Thank you so much......any other ideas????

Yes. Actually what font manager do you use?

I haven't downloaded fonts in a long time, but I use font book....the standard Mac font thing...would that have suddenly freaked out my photoshop even if I am not downloading any new fonts??

Okay, ditch FontBook. Here's what I'd do:

1. Deactivate all fonts FontBook is managing. Don't ever use it again. Seriously.

2. Download the free FontExplorer from Linotype. I've used it for 4 years and counting without issue:
http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorer

3. Use FE to Tools/Clean System Fonts Folder. This ensures only the required fonts are in library fonts. If you have all your fonts in here, you're wasting system resources and bogging down your machine. Move the moved fonts and your user fonts into one folder called MY FONTS, or the like.

4. In FE go to File/Add to Library to add all your fonts. FE will analyze any font conflicts and let you know. It can even search for corrupted fonts.

Let me know if this fixes it. I think it might help a bunch.

thank you for the tips. I deactivated all my fonts in FontBook and then used FE as you said....but photoshop still is having issues.. Any other suggestions? I can not thank you enough for your help. You have been incredible. :-)

You're welcome! Thanks for the recommendation!

I suggest deleting your photshop preference files. Just send them to trash, but don't delete yet:

Find '.pref' and '.plist' for a photoshop search on your computer. Move those files you find to the trash (don't delete).

Start up PS again and hopefully the issue will be resolved.

Another thing you can do is create a new Admin account and see if PS works there. If it does, there's something wrong with your current user account. If not, it's system wide.
