This seemed initially like it was font related; ps was always crashing when reading font lists, however crash log seems to indicate problem with kernal (?) my question - reinstall os? or what?

I would try some simple things first, like repairing permissions with Disk Utility, deleting system and font caches with YASU (Yet Another System Utility, freeware available from verstiontracker.com and macupdate.com) and running Disk utility on your startup volume before thinking about reinstalling the system. As a last resort, I would reinstall Adobe Photoshop CS2. I don't thing the OS is the problem per se, except that you may have one or more corrupt font files. There is also an excellent free beta version of Linotype Font Explorer X which is very stable and can help with font ID conflicts and the like; it's also available at vt or macupdate. HTH.
I will check out the utilities you mention, I also have a copy of font doctor which I have not used on these particular fonts.
Here's a little more detail on what I have done to troubleshoot this problem so far:
run repair permissions, fixed multiple directory problems with diskwarrior, reinstalled CS2 from two separate sets of install CD's, determined that the specific font folder (and its contents) causing the crashing is ./library/application support/adobe/fonts (which has also been reinstalled when the reinstalls were done - when the above mentioned fonts folder is moved to the desktop application launches and runs correctly; move it back, application crashes. When this font folder is on the desktop, however, InDesign won't launch because the folder is 'missing', so getting rid of the font folder is not a solution.
Have copied a similar font folder from another G4 Mac running Tiger and CS2 which does not crash to this problem station - application still crashes when reading fonts.
Have removed each Dimm, one by one, rebooted, and still experience the application crashing.
Have done a clean install of Tiger on and external FW drive along with CS2 - same problem; five other Macs in the shop -3 G4's and 2 G5's all running Tiger and CS2- don't have this problem.
It looks like you have done a great investigation. I suspect you may have a fond id conflict (one or more) due to fonts in that fonts folder. Try the Linotype app. It really does work well, and you can activate/deactivate fonts at will, so it is really simple to figure out which font or fonts are a problem. Try deactivating half the fonts in that folder; if no crash, you know it's one of the fonts in the other half of the folder. Follow that kind of iterative process until you've isolated the culprit(s) fonts. Linotype also includes font diagnostics which you could apply to that fonts folder to see what it finds. This Linotype app is really what is needed for decent font management in Mac OS X (and no, I have no financial or other ties to Linotype, except that I have spent a lot of money on their fonts!). HTH.
hey, thanks for your reply and suggestions -I will let you know what I find using the linotype utility.
