Double clicking a file created in Photoshop does not open the application. Neither does dragging the icon of the file onto the application. I am using Photoshop CS with Tiger. This happens with other applications also, but I notice it most frequently with Photoshop.

Thanks for your help.

HI Ellen,

For starters, try sending the: com.photoshop.plist file to the Trash. (Users>Library>Preferences>com.photoshop.plist) Empty the Trash.
Try clicking on a file created with PShopCS and see if that works. Also, if you have not already done so, keep the PhotoShopCS icon in your Dock. Try dragging a file on that and see if that opens the program.

Run Repair Permissions with Disk Utility. Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility. That can clear up a lot of problems. Also, emptying the caches of programs can help also. You might want to try Onyx, it's freeware and you can download it at www.versiontracker.com. Only takes about 5 minutes on 56K. That little program can keep any Mac humming!

One question. Do you have the alias for PShopCS on your desktop? If so, your Finder preferences could be corrutped. Trash the following file: Users>Library>Preferences>com.
apple.finder.plsit Empty the Trash. Don't sweat trashing these .plist files. When you relaunch the program your Mac will create new ones for you.

I hope at least one suggestion helps. Please post back and let us know how it goes.

One more suggestion. Try reinstalling PhotoshopCS. That could clear this up.

Thanks Carolyn. Regarding the first suggestion about deleting the com.photoshop.plist file (whatever that is), that file does not seem to exist. Could that be the problem? Also, I ran the disk utility. The Pshop CS icon is in the dock but not on the desktop. I'll look into the Onyx software, but is there anything else I can do?

HI Ellen,

Ok, every program/application on a Mac has a .plist file. Try this path instead:
MacintoshHD>Library>Preferences Somewhere in the Preferences folder is a .plist file for PhotoshopCS. Now, if you can't locate it that way try a search. You're on Tiger so Spotlight should be able to locate it. Go to the Blue Spotlight icon top right on your desktop. Type in: plist When Spotlight opens, click where it says, "Show All". Now on the right side of that window scroll down to where it says: Where click on Home.
ALL of your .plist files should be in that list.

One thing you might check also is the Preferences pane for PhotoshopCS. Launch PhotoshopCS then click PhotoshopCS>Preferences. Might be information there.

After re-reading your most recent post you didn't say whether you had tried reinstalling PhotoshopCS. That can cure a lot of ills just by doing that. And it only takes minutes.

What other programs/applications are you experiencing this same problem with?

I just thought of something else. I know from past experience that using fonts in graphics programs can cause irregularities in the way the program works. Follow this path: MacintoshHD>Usebrs>Library>Preferences>
com.apple.FontBook.plist

Trash the "com.apple.FontBook.plist and empty the Trash.
If your Fonts have a corrupt file, this will clear that up. And don't worry, your Mac will automatically create a new file the next time you launch AdobePS CS. That is when you get that far :-)

OK, next. Another idea is how much RAM does your computer have? Adobe programs are memory hogs. In case you aren't certain, go to: Apple icon top left of your desktop. Drag to where it says, "About This Mac". In that pane under the Processor, it will indicate how much RAM. I wouldn't even try less than 512MB of RAM for any system running Tiger and with the system resources required with Adobe, anything over 512 would keep your Mac more stable, ie., 1GB. Fewer crashes etc.

And one more suggestion. Go to this site:
http://www.macintouch.com/adobecs03.html
I have scanned through several of the posts there and you're certainly not alone with issues running Adobe with Tiger. And posting in the Support Forums at www.adobe.com is a great thing to do.

I hope that something helps. I honestly know how frustrating one can get in a situation like this.

Make sure you Trash the "com.apple.FontBook.plist file because according to some of the posts I did read, Fonts are causing a majority of the problems. If it works, that's one easy fix.

Hang in there,
Carolyn :-)

Wow, Carolyn S., thanks for coming up with so many ideas. I actually had done a search for the PS.plist without success but found and tossed the fontbook.plist and will follow up with your other suggestions tomorrow.
