Knowledge Level: Intermediate

Problem: Software
Computer Type: apple
Model: performa 578
RAM: 12meg
RAM Enhancer: Ram Doubler 2.x
OS Version: System 7.5.3

Description:
In setting up the Mac for my son at college, I reformattted the hard drive and reinstalled OS 7.5.3 and other software. It seems to work fine. But I discovered that I could not find a TCP or MacTCP control panel in the system folder (I was trying to get him connected to his college online system). A FindFile search said there WAS a TCP control panel, but it is not visible when I carefully explore the system and control panels folders.
So I tried to install a new TCP control panel, and when I did, I got a message saying, " you cannot install it because there is already an "invisible" control panel with the same name in place". Help! I can't see this invisible panel and I can't use it--and I can't put in a new one! I obviously need a TCP panel in my system. What is wrong--and most important--how can I fix it? Thanks for you help.

James,
Hi, my name is Ed. I'm a No Wonder volunteer and will try to answer your question. My email address is
Before you can do very much with an invisible file, e.g., trash it, you first have to make it visible. There are several ways to do this, but the easiest one I've found is to use a shareware utility called FileBuddy, which you can download from ZDNet Mac Download at

Use it to find the invisible file, click on the File Buddy Information icon and then simply uncheck the Invisible box. (You'll find File Buddy a useful tool to have around.)
Once you have done that, you may be able to use the file as is, or you can trash it and install a new one.
Good luck,
ed
P.S. I hope you don't mind a small suggestion. If you put a very brief description of the problem under "Subject" rather than your CV, it makes it easier for us volunteers to decide which problem to work on. For example, "TCP control panel invisible" would have done nicely in this case.
