I just recently installed a dvd player in my B&W G3 and now it is acting funny.
It seems to stall while doing anything such as writing here. Everything just stops and sits and then will start back up. Programs will stop and then quit.
My question is how should it be pinned?
Cable select
Slave
Master
Never had a problem with cd player.
I guessing that is my problem as my hard drive I'm guessing is pinned as a master.
Ran disk utility-no problems
Ran Disk Warrior-no problems
Ran permissiions-no problems
tried running fsck and had problems running as I kept getting a wierd message line after line.
Don't remember exactly whay it said(should have written it down) but something to the effect of run error disable something
Hitachi DVD-ROM GD-7000

I have a B&W G3
450 mhz
1 GB Ram
10.3.9

Your optical drive should be jumpered as a master. Your B&W G3 does not support cable select, and the optical drive is on a bus separate from the hard drive, so is not affected by the jumper setup on the HD (leave that HD set to master)
Did you buy that DVD-ROM used? Perhaps it's just faulty.
You can get brand-new drives with much faster reading capabilities for about $25. You can purchase brand-new dual-layer DVD burners for $30 to $35. Although I wouldn't recommend burning dual-layer DVDs (would take forever), at least you wouldn't be stuck with somebody else's castoff.

Try OWC for good Mac supported drives - here's one link:

I'm guessing without taking it out that it's jumpered to master as I can boot from it. It's weird as I can be typing and it will stop but if I keep typing it will catch up to me when it starts up again.
I haven't used it much so I don't know if it might be something else.
I did buy the dvd player used.
I started it up under single-user mode and here is what kept coming up. Repeatedly over and over and over. (First set of numbers are different ever time (after the USBF)
USBF: 26.963 AppleUSBOHCI [OOxla89800]:: Make Device error setting address.er=Oxe 00002ed device=Oxla9f200-releasing device

It does this constantly so it hard to run the fsck as you have to type really fast before it does this run thru again.
Thanks for your help

That's a hardware error, not related to your DVD-Rom drive in any way.
Do you have an external USB hub?
If not, what USB devices do you have connected to your Mac?
Try disconnecting ALL USB devices, except your mouse and keyboard.

If none of this helps, do you have USB ports on your display?

Let me know what you find out....

I do have a usb hub connected to my computer with a scanner, burner, wireless mouse all plugged into it. Also have a usb laser printer hooked directly to the computer. Still use the old adb key board. I disconnected the hub with no improvement. Scanner and burner are not turned on till I need to use them but tried them anyway. So it became a hit and miss with many restarts into single-user mode to see if the error occured again with the hub and different things hooked. It did. Turns out that it was my laser printer that is turned on all the time that was causing the problem. So I tried it with it disconnected. No error messages. Plugged it in but turned off. No errors. Turned it back on and restarted again and no error problems. Must have needed a restart (printer) So I hate to go and buy a new laser printer so I guess I'll just turn it off till I need it.
Thanks for all the help I couldn't have done it without your fantastic help. You are a god send. I am so glad I found this site a couple of years ago.

Did that also take care of your original problems with the system freezes (or pausing)?

Took care of everything. That's what I couldn't figure out was there were no problems for a couple of days and then started.
Would you still recommend me buying a new dvd burner this computer and putting this is a slower G3 I have? The onlt reason I got this in the first place was if I go to 10.4 I need a dvd player.
If you wouldn't mind me asking ... how would 10.4 work on this?
Would I have to get all new drivers for my scanner, printer etc... and would my extra programs still work or would I have to get new ones (versions)?

Lots of possibilities as an answer.
Your DVD drive should be OK now, I suppose.
It's just a case of 'the last thing I changed was the DVD drive, now I have problems, must be the DVD drive.'
As you now can see, that's not always the case.
As I noted, you can get a much higher performance new burner, for not a lot more than you paid to get a used drive. You could choose to wait to do that until after you update to 10.4 (10.4 has improved support for a wider variety of burners, so would be something to consider after you upgrade)

If you upgrade to 10.4, you should check for updated software, especially for scanners/printers, and any other hardware that you use. Go to the manufacturer's web site, and download the latest updates for that device, looking for support for 10.4 or higher.
You should also check for possible updates to your apps, and other utilities. www.versiontracker.com is a good place to start, as that lists thousands of titles. Search for the name of your software, and it will display the latest version available, with links to download the update, if needed.
