Earlier I wrote:
I just installed the new Safari update and now Safari and sometimes Telnet have long periods where they just show the spinning pinwheel cursor, and Activity Monitor says they're "not responding." Coincidence?
But it's still slow when I reverted to the previous version of Safari, could it have installed some network stuff besides Safari?
Also, TextEdit gives the pinwheel when i try to use my new HP scanner/printer. Could the HP drivers be at fault?

I restored from backup, before I updated safari and added the HP drivers, and the problem went away.
I just reinstalled the HP drivers and things are fine. So maybe it's the Safari update. If so, surely I'm not the only one with this problem?

OK, I installed the latest security update and the problem appears to be back. long waits in terminal and safari and the pinwheel wait cursor, and (only sometimes) force quit menu says "not responding."

The problem is solved: someone told me to reboot with my USB devices unplugged, then add them back one at a time to see if one is guilty. I did that and could not reproduce the problem.
