I am new to the Mac world.
I have a powerbook G3 Pismo 400Mhz with 512MB PC133. It's currently running on 10.2.6 without any problem. I am having "panic(cpu 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook3,1" when I try to boot it with panther install disc. Can you let me know if my hardware is not good enough for 10.3? or the ram I have (PC133) is the problem? My firmware is 4.1.8f5.
Thank in advance for your help.

I have a pismo laptop too…have you tried updating your Jaguar as high as it can go (10.2.8) and then installing Panther, archive and install? (Don't do the wipe and install yet).

Does it matters? I tried to remove my HD and pop in the panther CD and reboot. It gave me the same error.

It might matter in your case, and it can't hurt to try it.
However, most OS X discs are set for specific computers so you might have a disc that just won't work with your Pismo because it's for a G4 or G5 tower, for example. More info here:

So the answer might actually be a hardware issue. Make sure you have a Panther CD that's made for laptops; it should say that on the disc itself or documentation with the software.

That is very interesting to know. I came from the Windows world and never heard of such thing. So the driver is missing on the CD, not from the firmware? But when I upgrade from to 10.2 from 9.x, I was able to use the CD from iMac. So in general, can my G3 upgrade to 10.3, or even 10.4??

No, I don't think you understood what I meant. The cd you are using is "Computer Specific". If it's made for a Tower, it will only work for that type of computer. If it's made for a laptop it will work for that type of computer.
What does your install disc say? Laptop or Tower? If it doesn't say there then look in your OS X software documentation.

Sorry, forgot your other question. Your G3 Pismo should be able to go to higher systems, you just might have slower performance due to the amount of RAM you have, and you will use more hard drive space. Tiger uses 3GB of space… phew!
I actually did the same thing with my Pismo and used my iMac OS X software to install. Not sure why your Panther isn't working, but I still recommend you update fully to 10.2.8 then go to Panther.

I upgraded to 10.2.8 and rebooted with the panther install disc. The extact same errors poped up and hung the machine. I think I've tried enough and will stick with 10.2 for now. Thanks for all your help!
