Laugh if you must...but I copied some DVD's I purchased to my hard drive using DVDbackup. I ended up with VIDEO_TS folders. If I drag one of these folders to VLC, it plays just fine. However, if I burn that folder to a blank DVD as data, when I insert the DVD, click on the image, and drag the VIDEO_TS folder to VLC, it won't play. Does this mean I need to copy the file back to my hard drive in order to play it? Meaning the VIDEO_TS file won't play directly from the DVD? I ask because I have DVD's which contain a variety of DIVX avi files which do play directly from the DVD they're burned to, simply by dragging the avi file to VLC.

Part 2...and feel free to chuckle...I have yet to comprehend how to make a copy of a DVD which will play on a stand alone DVD player. I'm using Toast 6 Titanium, it allows me to burn a DVD, but my Toshiba DVD player simply rejects the disc when I try to play it.

Is it just me or am I missing something?

First of all I must make the standard pronouncement that copying protected DVDs is evil and anyone who even considers the idea will roast or drown in their particular laughing hell. The STATE rules. Long live copyright. Don't break laws. Be nice. be compliant

Now to theory.....
( nothing in the following is to be construed as advice or applicable to any purpose whatsoever It may be random monkies typing as far as the einstein of the universe is concerned )

TOAST 6 does not deal with protected DVDs. TOAST 6 does not compress double layer (DL) DVDs ( many commercial discs are DL ).

MactheRipper removes protection from most disks. MactheRipper is sometimes hard to find as the site is shut down from time to time. MactheRipper is free. There are other copy protection removal programs.

Once protection is removed from a commercial disk, you are typically left with a unprotected DL DVD. Such a disk can be burned on a DL DVD disk. If you do not have a DL DVD blank, then TOAST 7 ( which includes Roxio Popcorn ) can compress a DL DVD down to a single layer DVD. TOAST costs about $99. Popcorn is slightly cheaper.

So one method is to use MactheRipper and copy to hard drive. Then use TOAST 7 to burn a single layer DVD that will play in a standard player.

How do I know this ? Just 2 days ago my mother's brother who is dead contacted me during a seance and insisted that that this method works. And he does not lie and he has no way to cross his fingers. So you can take it as gospel.

Regards

I appreciate your response. Let me know how the seance thing works out, ok?

I have DVDbackup, DVD2OneX, and Toast 6 Titanium...using VLC for most playback. Per your suggestion, I've added MactheRipper. And, I suppose, I should upgrade to Toast 7.

In reality, it would probably end up being cheaper and less frustrating to simply buy more external hard drives...since VIDEO_TS folders drag, drop, and play very easily in VLC and I watch most of my movies on me computer anyway.

However, I'm stuck on the idea of somehow figuring out how to make DVD copies which will play on either my eMac combo drive or my stand alone DVD player....so I guess I'll keep struggling until I finally figure it out or, in total frustration, end up flinging my Lacie DVD burner out of my second floor window. By the way, I've used my second floor window for stuff like that before.

I still like the seance idea, though.

Thanks again.

You are welcome

Went and looked at DVD2OneX. 39 Euros. How do you like it ?
Went and looked at DVDbackup. Free. How do you like it ?
DVDbackup website appears to be shut down. Any chance you could send me a copy at DVDbackup@oh-god.com ?

Thanks

Copied this from another site ...............

This bears repeating because it seems a lot of people are not aware of the situation:

DVDBackup is NOT being developed or supported anymore. There will be NO updates for Tiger. The author specifically gave up because he could no longer afford to produce it for free, and the copyright laws in the U.S. prevented him from safely collecting money for it above ground.

I repeat, DVDBackup is dead. If it works for you, that's great, but if you're looking for a modern program that also handles newly emerging copy protection schemes, you need to use MacTheRipper.

The developer of DVDBackup will NOT be coming to your rescue. There will be NO tech support. There will be NO bug fixes. There will be NO upgrades. The source code will NOT be released to the public under the GPL. It's over. Please get used to this fact.

I'm not trying to be mean, but I think it's sad when folks get too emotionally attached to an old program, instead of going out and finding current tools that work.

Unfortunately, I deleted DVDbackUP before I read your message so I can't send you a copy. I switched to MactheRipper. I'll let you know how that works next time I need to copy something.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to justify spending 80 bucks for the Toast 7 "upgrade."

I made a VIDEO_TS folder with MactheRipper and followed Toast 6 instructions for making a video disk from a VIDEO_TS folder, burned it, verified the burn, but when I drag the VIDEO_TS folder to VLC I get the following:

cddax: Disc seems not to be CD-DA. libcdio reports it is DVD+R
main: no suitable access module for `/dev/rdisk2'

What am I missing?

I loaded a Video_TS folder into VLC and it played fine. This file was created by MTR. I used VLC under TIGER.
I did see any requirement to use TOAST 6. Only POPCORN or TOAST 7 will compress a double layer DVD down to a single layer for playing on a standard DVD player using a single layer recordable DVD.

Ok, let me back up a second and clarify my question:

I've got Toast 6, MacTheRipper, the latest Tiger in my tank, a Lacie DVD 16x burner, and a pile of TDK DVD+r DVD's. How can I burn a VIDEO_TS folder to a DVD so I can play the disk on my eMac with either Apple DVD Player or VLC?

X is the the short name for an unknown expert. an expert is a unknown drip under pressure. x for the unknown and spurt, a drip under pressure.

1) make sure the Lacie will burn DVD+R disks.
2) X used MactheRipper to make a VIDEO_TS folder of Joe vs the Volcano. TLC played it fine from hard drive.
3) to make a playable DVD disk, use Roxio popcorn ( $50) or TOAST 7 ( $99 )

Ok, and I speak the drips and spurts thing too.

I sorta figured the issue was Toast 6. In the Toast 6 manual, there's a set of instructions for burning a VIDEO_TS file and involves selecting the UDF menu button. Doing a burn that way prompts an error message...after I'm all finished, of course, and I have inserted the disc to play it...that the disc I just inserted is not a DVD ROM.

It figures I would buy Toast 6 Titanium and it doesn't do the one thing I needed it to do, burn a dvd from a VIDEO_TS file. Just my luck.

Guess I could just burn VIDEO_TS files as data and, when I want to watch a movie, copy the contents of the disc back to my hard drive and drag the VIDEO_TS folder to VLC...or send Roxio more money...it's all drips and spurts.

Sidebar: One thing I've noticed is how wonderful a 700 mb DIVX AVI file looks when played on my mac. Joe emailed me from inside a volcano and gave me a heads up about that one.

Thanks,

yossarian, the inept

Of course there is still DVD2ONE which has a trial version, which X has not fired up. A possible substitute to popcorn and toast 7. $39 euros

Oddly enough, and after a great deal of wading (and I mean serious wading) through Roxio's support site from hell, I discover Toast 6 allows one to make a DVD from a VIDEO_TS file which will play on both Apple's DVD player and most stand alone DVD players. Not mine, of course, but since I haven't actually discovered how to communicate directly with a tech at Roxio yet, that question, for the time being, will probably remain unanswered. Looks like I'm going down the "path," right? Well, while I'm at it, I might as well bring a lunch, make a day of it, and try to "speak" to a tech at Lacie, too.
