I am having problems collecting AND sending email through MAIL. I have an SBC global account. I initially thought it was a port 25 problem and have since opted out of SBC's security around port 25. I am still having trouble. I am using Mac OS X v. 10.4.3
This is the problem statement: Connection Failure
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account "HOME" or try again.
The server error encountered was: The connection to the server "mail.sbcglobal.net" on port 110 timed out.
I followed your advice given to another member to go to utilities - terminal - i typed in what you suggested and this is what the response was...

+OK hello from popgate(2.33.3)
I'm pretty clueless and quite frustrated. I have been a Mac since 91 and I have never had a problem EVER. Can you help me?
Thanks, Jean

Jean,
I believe that means that a setting might not be entered correctly... I went to the SBC website to check settings, here is what I came up with:
E-mail Settings:
Mail Server Type: POP3
Incoming Mail (POP): ipostoffice.worldnet.att.net
Outgoing Mail (SMTP): imailhost.worldnet.att.net
Ensure that the option My server requires authentication is checked.
User name or POP name: Enter the full e-mail address in the User Name field. For example:
example@att.net or
example@worldnet.att.net
Ensure that the option Always connect to this account using is selected, and Local Area Network is chosen from the drop-down menu on the Connections tab.
Ensure that secure connection (SSL) is enabled and set to port number 465 for SMTP.
Ensure that secure connection (SSL) is enabled and set to port number 995 for POP3.
If you have trouble finding where to enter this info, let me know! I hope this helps!

Jason - are these the correct settings for a person who haas the sbcglobal.net accounts? Perhaps they are since this company merged with ATT. Why wouldn't they have told us about the changes. UGH!
I'll give all of this a try.

I think SBC and ATT joined a while back I am not to sure though.... Let me know if it works!

okay Jason - it was a no go... the settings you provided did not allow me to receive or send email through MAIL.
I too wnet to the sbc website and came up with another set of sttings and ports, etc. I feel that they are correct. for some reason i now seem to be in password hell. I've doublechecked and triple checked my passwords - for some reason the sbcglobal server is rejecting it? Why? UGH! I'm still clunking along. I'll keep you posted - if you think of anything let me know.
Could this have anything to do with isync? wondering.

Hey there,
I can't imagine this has anything to do with iSync, I bet its just a password or username error... Maybe call the SBC customer support to verify settings and username formats? I hope it works out, let us know if you have more problems! I am going to close the ticket, but if you have more problems certainly open up anyother one!

jason - thanks for your input - i ended up making all sbcglobal email forwarded to my .mac account which is functioning fine. i have been working on this for weeks - between work, kids, holidays, etc. i give up. i am usually really good at troubleshooting and fixing things. it makes no sense at all. SOOOO .mac is the answer for me.
thanks for everything. happy new year. jean
