I am running Panther with a D-Link 524 router and trying to set up the latest version of Azureus. I have followed all of the instructions and cannot get a hole punched thru the firewall. After trying everything I could think of, I installed the Tomato client and had the same problem. I just can't seem to figure out where the problem lays. Can you help?

Hi Aidren

You need to setup the DLink to forward all traffic on port 6889 (or whatever port you choose in Azureus)
To do this, login to the router and access the NAT/Port forwarding section.
Create a new rule that forwards all traffic on the respective port to point at the static IP on your Mac.

No Bit Torrent clients will work unless you setup port forwarding.

Here are Dlink 524 specific instructions for Bit Torrent-

Thank you Ed. I had it set that way for the previous Client I had (that was getting too old and not being accepted at some of the sites) and it did work, but Azureus is supposed to work out of one port now -- tcp for download and udp for tracking. They are also recommending to not use the port range of 6881 to 6889 anymore due to overuse and blacklisting. The Tomato client I installed seems to only use one port as well, although you can set up various trackers, each on a different port. Azureus is now advising to pick a single port number from 41952 to 65535. I have tried numerous ones and nothing works. I have just finished setting them back to the old range and still nothing is happening. I will let them sit overnight and see if they happen to connect but I am not holding out much hope. I would be greatful for more input if you have any.

Thanks again

Azureus does work on only one port.

Have you used the config wizard in Azureus which tests your port forwarding? See-
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/arch...eus_page_3.cfm

It is possible that your ISP is blocking those ports, once you have Azureus running, check this page out and enter the port number to see if its open-

Hi Ed,

I do appreciate your time on this. I ran two clients (Azureus and Tomato)last night on two different tracker ports in the normal 688* range. They both downloaded but they are mostly not getting tracker connection. Tomato doesn't give detailed information, but Azureus is showing higher than 75% connection errors.

Thanks for the other port check site -- I checked that whole 688* range and none work -- but, I also checked IRC (which I have set up) and several other ports that are used on OS X for ethernet networking and got negative results on every one of them. So I am hooped!! I will try some of the other ports, again, suggested by Azureus and see what happens, but am not too hopeful as I have been there already.

I am beginning to wonder if my Alpha Shield is causing some anomaly here or something. It is basically just a switch, which is either open or closed, so I don't really see how it can be causing a problem (or am I wrong about that??). At any rate, I will take that piece out of the chain as well and see what happens.

I will get back to you after I've done all the above. In the meantime, if you have information regarding the Alpha Shield, I would be happy to know it.

Thanks so much
Aidren

So if I understand it, you have a DLInk 524 and an Alpha Shield hardware firewall?

Alpha Shield's website seems to be down (hacked?).

I did find this-
"Stealth" level protection from Internet probes on ports 1 - 65535

It looks like (I may be wrong) you cannot change these settings on the Alpha Shield, so removing it from the equation should verify that it is blocking those ports.

Does the Alpha Shield give you any log or other report on what is going on?

Hi Ed

Sorry I have not replied until now, but as it turned out my ISP was having problems as well and eventually went down. When that was finally sorted out I wasn't able to connect at all except thru the modem only. So I started from there again. Reset the router and left the alpha shield off and actually did get a ping thru on one of the common ports (80) but not on the 6881-9 or 194, so I suspect they have been blacklisted by my ISP. But now I have another problem, which is, when I reset my rounter configs (using a static address) it only works for a few hours and then goes down. The ISP is suggesting I need a new router but I am going to call them this week to see if they will assign me a statice IP address and then try again -- I really don't think there is a problem with the router.

You have been extremely helpful with this matter and I will continue to keep you posted although I have to get some things done and will have to experiment in between.

I do need to get it resolved soon as I want to network with someone via the internet and need some semblance of security involved.

Thanks so much again for your help and if you have any more suggestions in the meantime???

I have another question that I will put up on a separate thread regarding schedule calendars and WebDAV.

Thanks again,

Aidren

The only way to test a problem with the router is to replace it or upgrade the firmware.

I will see if I can help with your other question.

I have looked at your other question on Webdav and can provide some info on the setup we use for our clients.

I am answering here as I dont want to take ownership of the other question if anyone else can answer for you.

Currently we have our setup as-
Xserve or Linux Mandrake server with webdav module installed
Clients publish iCal calendars to this server internally on LAN
Other internal clients or external ones can subscribe to these calendars in iCal or view via the web page, these are read only.
Only the original publisher can make changes and refresh the calendars.

Instructions for installation can be read here-
http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/ma...al_webdav.html
http://www.gregwestin.com/phpicalendar.php

All that this requires for external access is port 80 pointing at the Mac with the webdav installed.
