I ran into a problem 2 days ago, that is rather difficult to explain, please bare with my and what may be a long post.

My system at work: G5 1.8ghz, OSX 10.3.8
Server: Xserve w/ OSX Server - sorry not sure what model and version (posting from home).

While working on a rather large Illustrator CS2 file over the network, I somehow saved the wrong file. My work habits are very strict, and I cannot fathom how I did this.

The new file supplied had all the pictures deleted from it in order to reduce the file size so it could be emailed. The task I had, was to copy the pictures out of the old file, and paste into the new file.

First thing I did was move the old files into a new folder within the job folder, and rename them by adding "OLD" to the end of the filename. I open the OLD file, and then open the NEW file. I do this by dragging the icons from the folder to the Illustrator icon on the dock. I am very careful to check/doublecheck the filenames and dates to ensure I have the correct files. I copy and paste the pictures, and save-as the newer FIXED file as a a new file with the job docket number at the beginning of the name.

If I accidentally saved the wrong file, I would KNOW, because it would have "OLD" at the end of the name. This was NOT so.

I run a colour proof out, and it turns out to be the OLD file (non of the text edits were present).

How? How can this be? Is my brain fried, and my recollection a halucination? Or did the computer somehow open the contents of the OLD file within the new one?

Here's why I think so: While doing all this, Illustrator quit on me once, and appeared to hang on me at least twice (no open status bar appeared when icon dragged to dock, but Illustrator came to front) and I ended up forcing it to quit twice. As well, the finder relaunched on me at least 3 times while trying to navigate to this jobs' folder structure (see above link to related problem), and I also recall having to force the finder to relaunch at least twice. At this point, I should have rebooted my system and perhaps the server -- but the job was ultra-rush as the client was waiting in the boardroom for the proof.

I'm wondering if it is possible that amongst all this grief, somehow Illustrator DID open one or both files (even though I force quit), and it opened the OLD file within the new file's name?

The only other explaination is that I am loosing my mind -- because when I did the save-as, there was no OLD in the filename, yet the file I printed was clearly the out of date one.

This is a serious issue for our shop, and I was sent home (with pay) because of it. I'm loosing sleep over it, stressed to the point that I may take a leave of absence. Because I KNOW I opened, fixed, and saved the correct new file, the date and filename was correct, and the old out of date file was moved outside the working folder, and renamed BEFORE I began any work on the job -- a habit I do NOT deviate from.

You had major app and Finder problems when you did this, suggesting that you have problems with your installed version of Illustrator as well as whatever version of Mac OS you're running. I would do an install/archive on your computer using the original CDs, trash and reinstall Illustrator and install all their zillion updates, run Disk Utility off your install CDs to check for any system errors and run DiskWarrior on your disk (available from Alsoft for $79, they also have site licenses, use version 3.0.3). Then do a mini-trial of what you did before and see what happens. I suspect you will have no problem. No offense, but with both the program you're using crashing AND the system crashing while you're working, I'm surprised you had anything left to work with. Your brain, BTW is not fried. Relax. There is nothing intuitive about using computers, including the Macintosh and you should not let this upset you to this degree. Hope this helps some...
