hi. thank you for your time.

after a few hours of light use, suddenly i heard a noise that sounded like a snap followed by a high pitched whistle.

applications were frozen and i couldn't force quit or restart.

i had to hard restart, boot and login.

Finder would load, but all other programs that launch at login took longer than two minutes to load. It used to take only a few seconds.

i don't hear my hard drive reading, except in short bursts.

i have a powerpc 2.3 g5 with 2.5 gigs of ram. Most actions load very quickly but quicksilver searches, and loading desktop icons cause my machine to nearly stop.

could this be a failing hard drive? are there any further information for me to provide to help diagnose my problem?

Thanks.

Dave

thanks for the suggestion.

2stf/8/3:A(upper)

i found an error for my mass storage device, but upon reboot, my problem with launching finder disappeared.

when i use quicksilver, and many results appear, the application freezes and quits.

can a hard drive have multiple, isolated errors before it finally dies?

how can i transfer my data from a problematic hard drive to a newer unit?

Do you have any suggestions for a replacement hard drive brand/model, or site?

thanks.

I have used many brands of hard drive over the years with very little difference. I would shop for the best deal. I think your computer requires a SATA (serial ATA) drive. Compare these two sites (I have used both recently):
www.zipzoomfly.com
www.newegg.com

It should be easy to transfer files, but the longer you wait, the more of them may be permanently damaged.

Hard drive errors often slowly build up over time. By the time you observe problems, the errors are quite high already.
