hi my name is Derek and this question is regarding my girlfriends mac. I'm pretty computer literate but I've never seen this message before (Application Launch Failure...The application "program i chose" could no be launched because of a shared library error: ",<>" can you help? It does this with other programs also such as "Internet Explorer, AIM, Shock wave, and others" i tried to do the live 24 hour service chat applet but it says that Shock wave isn't installed and when we tried to re-install it, the above message would show up. Thats about all Ive noticed, the problem started today (7/13/05) in the morning. Please help.
thanks a lot.

Hello, my name is max, and i'll be assisting you.
Derek, do you have any virus recognition software on your computer(Virex, Internet Securities, Norton Anti-Virus)? If you don't, i would definately download one of them and run a virus check. If it comes out clean, then it seems you might have a problem with Mac OS X. What version are you running?
Thank you in advance for clearing things up,
and Have a nice Day.

I downloaded Virex, as well as another virus detector, but when I click on the icon to open up StuffIt Expander in order to install Virex, it gives me the error message I mentioned earlier. So I can't run a virus check, because I can't install the detector.
I really have no idea what to do here, my internet works fine, it's just obviously more than a little annoying to try to download something, only to receive an error message. I've never encountered something like this, even when I had a PC.
Oh, and the version I'm running is Mac OS X 10.2.8
If you have any other suggestions, I'd appreciate them...thank you for your time.

Thank you for clearing that up. Try completely deleting any shortcuts for StuffIt Expander, and then re-downloading it from the internet(free, stuffit.com).
Then open the virex, and run a check once StuffIt is Working.
As an alternative, you could go to any Apple Store and purchase Mac OS X v. 10.4.2, and then Install that, because it comes with copies of virex and the latest StuffIt Expander software.
Hope this helps,
and HAve a nice day.

Well, I tried deleting StuffIt, but my computer isn't allowing me to trash it. It says that StuffIt is in use...also, as I said before, any program I download doesn't open, so I'm not sure that redownloading StuffIt would work.
I suppose I'll have to go purchase 10.4.2, hopefully that will work. If not, I guess my only alternative is to take the computer in and have it looked at.
Thank you again for your time.

OK, try repairing the permissions through disk utility, or repairing the disk through disk utility.

I repaired the permissions, but was unable to repair the disk. The button that said "Repair Disk" was not highlighted, it was unclickable I guess I could say. Repairing the permissions didn't do much, although at first, it appeared that StuffIt was going to work. But in the end, I got the same error message.

I am going to return this to the pool, maybe someone else can help you, because i cannot think of any other way to solve it. But just so you know, there are no known macintosh viruses.
Have a nice day.
