Knowledge Level: Beginner

Problem: Software
Computer Type: Aple
Model: powerMac 6500 275
RAM: 48meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
I have new powr mac 6500 w/small business package. I loaded quickey deluxe 98, and family lawyer, plus IBM dialer for internet connection.Computer has crashed many times in the three weeks I have owned it. Have run disk first aid, and norton disk doctor. both found small problems and fixed them. At Apple's suggestion, I rebuilt the hard drive.
I continue to get freezes and lost preferences mostly in Intuit applications. We did find the conflict between quicken and after dark. I am at wits end with this machine.Do you know of any extension conflicts or other conflicts with the preloaded software and what I have loaded? I have not downloaded any files from the net.
Thanks

Dear Paul Osgood,

Try using the Intuit applications alone; that is, prior to using either of them, quit any and all other running programs. See if this provides you with a better user experience with the Inutit applications.

Also, make sure sufficient RAM is allocated to the Intuit applications. Highlight the application icon by clicking once on it, and then press the command and "I" keys to reveal the Get Info window. Make sure the "Preferred Size" is at least the "Suggested Size." With respect to Quicken 98 This should be about 5200K with virtual memory turned on, or almost 11,000K with virtual memory turned off.

As you can see, Quicken 98 is an application that, basically, cries out for virtual memory to be turned on, since without virtual memory being turned on it's memory requirements more than double.

To turn on virtual memory to it's minimum setting (1 meg more than available installed RAM), go to your Memory control panel and push the button to use defaults. This should both turn on virtual memory to it's minimum setting, and set your disk cache to the proper size. This will provide you with far more efficient memory usage, not only by Quicken 98, but by your system folder and most other applications, while avoiding the performance degradation sometimes associated with using higher levels of virtual memory.

In addition, you can also download a demo of Conflict Catcher 4.1.1 from . In my opinion, this is one of the few essential Macintosh utilities (along with Norton Utilities and a good backup program, such as Dantz Retrospect or Retrospect Express). CC4 not only manages your startup items, but also will perform conflict tests in the event you experience future problems.

Finally, it's important to run Norton Disk Doctor (as you write that you have) on a regular basis since it can catch disk related problems that greatly affect performance.

Best regards,

Samuel Sharp
