When booting, the screen is 'blank', until login screen, viewable until pressing the buttons for brightness. Also one problem: when i'm working, and close the screen, then the computer is sleeping for ever, only helps when restart! Please respond. thnx in advance

Hi! I have the same powerbook with the same system on it (I have the Pismo, black, with firewire). Have you:

1. Repaired permissions?
2. Fully charged the battery?
3. Checked your energy saver preferences in System Prefs to make sure you don't have it set for Optimum Battery Performance?

If none of these things work you should try zapping the PRAM (preference memory) and see if this shakes things loose:
command + option + p + r, hold this combo on restart and let the chime happen three times. Release on the fourth chime.

Let me know what happens.

hey.

thanks for the fast reply. i didn't really understand how to zap the PRAM :-( on behind of the powerbook there's a 'howto' reset the computer, but it didn't fix the problem. also i want to ask, is there a chance to upgrade the firmware, kernel or something else. one more thing i have a pc too, but when i connect it to the laptop nothing happens, can u give me some help about it too.

Thanks in advance
Yavor

Zap PRAM:
reboot while holding the command (apple and clover key) + option + p + r, hold this combo and let the restart chime happen three times. Release on the fourth chime. Does this make sense?

What about my other questions? Permissions? Battery? Let me know the answers to those and we'll move forward.

sorry for my stupidity .. but what is 'clover key'? one thing, i did it like this .. from booted Mac OSX 10.2.8 i just restart, and holding fn + ctrl + option + p + r. is this correct? i'm using user root, because i prefer to use it instead of some other user, the batteries are fully charged

tnx

No problemo.

No need to use root. In fact, don't use that unless you really know what you're doing. You can permanently screw something up and not know it. Root is for power users only.

You can have more than one admin account on a computer, which is what I think you're referring to when you say the word "root" account. Use the account you intend to use the most for the Zap the PRAM step.

Zap the PRAM:
Command key (apple/clover key, the little symbol with four loops) + option + p + r. Do not hit any other keys but these on restart. Hold them till you hear the start up chime three times.

Does this make sense?

GOT IT!

But the problem isn't fixed
also i'm have great expirience with *NIX OSs. i start to learn them when i was 12, now i'm 25 :") so it's not a problem for this 'root'. Other things to try? What about the external (PC) monitor?

What PC Monitor? You never mentioned it. Are you using an external screen?

Boot up with your hardware test cd and see if you can get the powerbook screen to work. If it doesn't you could have a bad video card.

Let me know what happens.

yes i'm trying to connect externel screen. the situation is like this .. when start it with externel monitor everything is ok until the white screen with the apple finished loading. after that it's switches for the powerbook's screen.

If you can get to your System Prefs/Open Displays before your screen goes dark, try to see if you can change your external monitor display settings. If it's set for "mirroring", turn that off. If mirroring is off, turn it on and see what happens.
