I am finding it impossible to respond to websites on the web that have places you click. I have read Mail help and it talks about using Mail Preferences to set up the use of e-mail accounts for use in this way, but when I try to use mail, everything under the Mail menu is greyed out but Services. In fact almost all the things under all the menus are greyed out.My finder cannot even find Mail Preferences on my computer. Please help.

Hi Donna
Can you explain a little better what you're trying to do?
Are you trying to click on email links on a web page and use an email client automatically to send emails?

Hi, Bob,
Yes, and more. I've just moved to England and am starting to look for work. At many of the employment agency sites, they have you send your CV if you're interested in a particular job. But they don't have an e-mail address listed, just "If interested, please click here to send your CV". There are lots of "contact us" things like that on the web. When I click, my Mail program opens and tells me I have no e-mail accounts configured to use mail. That's absolutely true, because to configure them (and I have accounts I am using with AOL, Virgin.net, and .Mac) i would have to use the functions within the Mail program which are virtually all greyed out. For example, the only thing under the Mail menu that is not greyed out is Services, and almost everything under Services is greyed out, and the ones that aren't greyed out only lead to functions under them, which are all greyed out. So basically, Mail is useless to me. To use any of my e-mail accounts, I go on the web, go to the service's web site, and do it that way. On the assumption that somehow Mail had become corrupted, I even did "software recovery " on it, but that didn't help either. Any suggestions? Thanks so much for helping.

You want to setup Apple's Mail program to use for your email client with your AOL account, right?
Go to this page;
http://www.aol.com/downloads/?
Download AOLŪ SERVICE ASSISTANT
This should do it for you. Here's teh description;
* - Exclusive tool for AOL members that makes it easy to set up your Mac OS X applications to work with the AOL service.
* - Mail - Easily configure Mac OS X Mail to send and receive AOL mail. You can also import your incoming and outgoing messages from your Personal Filing Cabinet into Mail.
* - iChat - Easily set up iChat to work with your Screen Name.
* - Address Book - Import your AOL Address Book contacts into your Mac OS X Address Book without bringing in duplicate entries.
* - Safari - Import your AOL Favorite Places into a folder in the Safari Bookmarks Bar.

Thank you. I will do that. Would Virgin.net and .Mac have similar things for me to download? What I read on .Mac seemed to indicate that I only had to fill in the first part of that "form" that Mail keeps offering and .Mac would do the rest, but that did not happen. I've tried to fill in the right things for Virgin.net, but I wasn't sure of those. I want to be able to use at least one of these as well because the AOL account is a US account that I'm still paying for month by month until I am sure I am set up to manage with the other two. I hope to discontinue it (and save the monthly fee) before too long. I'm also worried that if I use the AOL download, I still won't be able to use Mail for anything else due to all the things being greyed out. Do you have any clues as to why that might be, or do you expect that the greying will cease when I get an e-mail account hooked up to Mail.
Again, thanks for your help.

Open Mail, then go to the Help Menu. Under Discover, you'll see Set Up Accounts. Click on that. It will have all the info on setting up your account (s).
You'll need to know the settings for incoming and outgoing mail from your ISP;
something like this;
incoming - mail.virgin.net
outgoing - smtp.virgin.net

Bob,
Thanks so much. AOL is now set up and all the greyed out parts of Mail are un-greyed and operational. I think, with your follow-up, I can handle it from here. Thank you SO much.
