Stuart,

What your system is having is a Kernel Panic. A kernel panic can be caused by damaged or incompatible software or, more rarely, damaged or incompatible hardware. There is a bunch of things we can do to try and fix this but i'll need to know more about the computer. What OSX version is it running. Have you installed anything new prior to this happening. Whatever info you can give me would help me tell you how to go about fixing it.

Thanks

Thank you for your time & help, The OSX version was 10.2
I bought the install cd's but they were for an ibook.Last
week i bought the panther osx full dvd install from e-bay I should have them by this week. Some guy told me it could be the RAM so i bought 256mb but the powerbook had a 512mb so i'm thinking that might be the problem. Can I download the recovery cd's and make a boot up disk with WINDOWSxp.

once again thank you,

I don't think it's RAM related but if you've already purchased new RAM it's worth a shot.

I would wait until you get your copy of Panther before trying to create recovery cd's from XP. When you do get Panther I recommend doing a clean install which will wipe the HD clean before installing. If there is info on there that you need to get off i have a little trick that might work. If you have access to another Mac, get yourself a firewire cable and hook the two systems together via the firewire ports. Start up your Powerbook with the "t" key held down. This turns your system into a firewire drive. If it starts up successfully you will see a floating firewire icon on the screen and nothing else. From the other system that it's hooked to you should see the Powerbooks HD show up on the desktop with a FW icon. From there you can access your HD and pull off whatever you might need before doing a clean install.

But first thing I would try is restarting your Powerbook in Single-User Mode and running what's called the fsck command (file system check). You can boot into the Mac’s raw Unix underlayer to perform some diagnostic and healing commands. If you press Command-S (or apple-s) when you restart the system, Mac OS X brings up a whole UNIX-based code window. When it stops at the localhost # prompt, type sbin/fsck -y if your system is not Journaled or type sbin/fsck -f if your system is Journaled. A system check program takes over and will tell you if your drive needs repair. Most of the time if it finds a problem it will fix it. It’s the UNIX version of a desktop rebuild, a quick Disk Doctor. Once the diagnostic is done running it will tell you if your system appears ok or if it has fixed found problems. After the localhost # prompt type exit and then hit the enter key. This will continue the boot up process and hopefully restore some sanity to your Powerbook.

There may also be issues with the firmware or the permissions but we can addres those later if need be.

Good luck and let me know how you make out.

Thanks

I can't type anything when I boot into the Mac’s raw Unix underlayer the shadow still roll's down the screen with the old saying "YOU NEED TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER...etc."
I can't find any one willing to try that firewire trick; it's like my computer's got aids now I know why they call it a virus. What are permissions? I ask because the person who sold me the powerbook might have stolnen/found it.

thank you for your reply,

Stuart,

Mac OS X incorporates a subsystem based on a UNIX-style operating system that uses permissions in the file system. Every file and folder on your hard disk has an associated set of permissions that determines who can read, write to, or execute it. User permissions associated with files, folders, or applications can become damaged and prevent a file or application from opening. Permissions problems can also cause your computer to run slowly.

To repair permissions you need to boot from an installer disk which you can do once you get Panther. Once booted from the installer disk and the install screen appears, go to the top menu under File and scroll to Open Disk Utility. There will be a feature in there to Repair and/or Verify Permissions. Click the Repair button and let it run.

Something else to try while you are waiting for Panther is to reset the PRAM. Follow steps below.

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Apple, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the fourth time.
6. Release the keys.

Sounds like this Powerbook has been around so there is no telling what could be wrong with it. I think your best bet is going to be doing the clean install but give these other things a shot first and let me know.

Thanks
