Hi,
I keep getting a laser calibration error whenever I try to burn a CD from iTunes 5 and a Medium Sense Error when I try through Toast 6. I'm using OS X 10.4.6 and the drive model is Matshita UJ-815. I have tried 650MB and 700MB CD-Rs with the same result so I went out and bought a CD Lens Cleaner. Still the same result. It should be noted that both CDs and DVDs play just fine, it's just the burning that's the problem. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike :-)
Try updating iTunes. It should be version 6.0.4 now.
Here is the link:
www.apple.com/itunes <--- takes you directly to the download page and it's FREE.
If that doesn't do the trick, please don't hesitate to post back. I am a little confused though. Why use two different software to burn CD's when iTunes does the job admirably? Just curious!
Try updating iTunes and see if that helps....

Sorry, I am at iTunes 6.0.4. I tried Toast only when iTunes failed. I use it if I want to backup data to a DVD but I haven't burned anything in about 2 months.

Hi again Carolyn,
Do you know if there any diagnostic tools out there that can tell me what the problem is?

Are you completely up to date on all your system software? Including Toast?
Also, if I were you I would run Disk Utility, it's in your Applications folder and Repair Permissions. That can fix a myriad of problems. Ok.. diagnostics? Either DiskWarrior
www.alsoft.com OR TechToolPro4
www.micromat.com.
I've got both, and swear by them.
With iTunes I want you to try this: Sometimes preference files can get corrupted so I'm going to explain how to fix that. Follow this path:
MacintoshHD>User>Library>Preferences. Open the Preference folder and locate this file: com.apple.itunes.plist Drag that file to the Trash. Don't worry, next time you launch iTunes your Mac will create a nice new spiffy .plist for you.
I would also you a system disk to check your drive using the Disk Utility application on the disk.
I hope I'm helping a little at least... maybe not fix something but hopefully get you going in the right direction.
Carolyn :-)

Hi Carolyn,
I had tried all of these different things individually with no luck so I bit the bullet and did a complete disk maintenance on my hard drive. Here's what I did.
1) Ran Disk Utility and repaired all permissions.
2) Booted from an external drive and ran DiskWarrior to repair/optimize the directory.
3) While still booted from the external dirive, I ran a full defrag using iDefrag. After a full day, the CD burner works again!
Thanks for all your help!
Mike

Hi Mike,
I'm so glad it's working! That is so frustrating when you need to burn a CD and it gives you grief instead.
BTW, run Disk Utility at least once a week to Repair Permissions. It will really help keep your Mac in good shape!
Carolyn :-)
