For about the last two months, my powerbook G4 (15' 1.5 ghz, 512 ram) has been getting progressively slower. I have been doing many recordings on garageband 2, and the program seems to lag a good amount. Also, Safari quits whenever my computer is doing alot. Safari can be my only program running, but when i view about 6 pictures at once, the program crashes and quits. I have 28 gb available with a 74 gb hard drive, so i still have some space left. I have done alot of hard drive intensive stuff in the past months, but the computer runs slow even after i deleted a bunch of stuff. Even the finder seems to load slower. Any suggestions?

512 MB is probably not much when using garageband, especially if you have version 2. I would recommend 1 GB or more.
Is there any improvement after restarting your PowerBook?
Have you tried repairing the permissions on your system? (Open Disk Utility, click on your drive, and click on the repair permissions button)
Have you tried any of the system maintenance utilities (OnyX, Maintain, MacJanitor, YASU, Cocktail, many others can be downloaded from versiontracker.com)

If some simple maintenance doesn't really help, or the response from your system is continuing to deteriorate, possibly your hard drive is failing, which you can test by booting to your OS X installer disk 1, and choosing disk utility from the Installer menu at the first screen you see.
Again, click on your drive, and then click on the Repair Disk button.

Come back here with what you discover..
