TICKET ARCHIVE -> Powermac G4...new Hd Install

Hi folks,
Whew, am I glad I found this community. I have NO support from the windoze system administrator at work.

The HD in my powermac G4 went unreadable a couple times and is being replaced.

The IBM Deskstar 60gb HD is out now and the mac is down currently. The system administrator is ordering a new HD. But I've never replaced a HD in a macintosh before. The mac is dual OS, OS9.2 (which I use most) and OSX 10.1 (which I rarely use, only to copy files to windoze servers).

Does anyone have tips on getting this mac back up? I suppose I install OS9.2 first, then how do I install OSX? My files are backed up on a server and I know how to copy them back. But getting the new HD/mac prepared is a mystery to me.

THANK YOU.

Hi Dan

Not too hard to do.

Once the drive is installed, you can install OS 9, and when that's done, boot off the OS X disk and install that. Look through the menus carefully. You don't want to do an Erase and Install, this would delete OS 9.

You can also install OS X first, then install OS 9. Take a look at this page for info on that;

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106294

Once done, move your files back.

Hi Bobw,
THANK YOU for the support and relief. I didn't expect it to be too difficult but I wanted to prepare ahead of time.

Another item:
The powermac G4 came with an nvidia 128mb agp card that has two connectors, one's a typical looking monitor jack and the other is a slightly wider one that sysadmin says is a dvi connector. Can I hook up two monitors to this video card or do I need to get an additional card, or replace the card with one that has two monitor jacks etc.?

THANK YOU folks, I don't know what I'd do without you.
Cheers,
Dan

For the 128mb agp card, go to;

http://www.nvidia.com/page/home.html

And search the card. You'll need to know the exact model.

Bob, DOH! it says in my G4 manual that I can hook two monitors to the card that's in there already. One connector's adc and one's a vga. So after I get this mac back up it'll have two monitors on it woohoo!

I've been a pc user my whole life, recently I got this macintosh at work and I guess I just have fear of the unknown. But I'm learning. i.e. HDs are the same, video cards etc. And now even the processor, but my 3 y/o G4 does have the powerpc chip, I think.

Thank you very much for your reply. Hopefully the new HD install will go easily. But it's good to know you kind folks are there just in case.
Cheers,
Dan

Hey Bob,
Although it says in the manual that I can hook a second monitor up, does that only apply to OSX? Or can I utilize dual monitors in OS9.2 also? (I HOPE). All my apps. are OS9.2, I'm afraid of OSX using QuarkXPress.

I owe you a beer man!

Dan

You should be able to use dual monitors in both systems.
