Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Software
Computer Type: Mac/Apple
Model: Powermac 6500/225
RAM: 32meg
RAM Enhancer: Ram Doubler 2.x
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
Hi I have sent this message before But none of the suggestions I have gotten have worked. I could not reply to the last reply I got because my Mail server deleted it after I read it and before I could reply. Well to the problem now my computer freezes up all the time when I am online. I used to think it ahhad something to do with netscape so I got the newest version and it still did it. Then I stooped to the lowest I could go and got IE 3. That still froze up alot. Then I had it freeze up while not even in a browser I was just connected and had not opened a browser(for example opening clarisworks while I was connected). I have gotten the suggestions to Increse the memory in my browser(Duh), get the new version of netscape , and get the new OT/PPP(Which comes with OS8.1). I have done all the suggestions I have gotten(usually I had done them before I was even told to). This is one of the most annoying problems that I know of can you please help me. It took me about 45 minutes to get this letter sent because the comp froze up so much. Oh yeah I have a second quick question (not nearly as important as the other) on some of the fonts on all my browsers the s's look like a's. I have tried both having take others fonts and force mine none worked. Thanks again

Dear neroll,

Unless it's the most current version, disable RamDoubler.

Even with the latest release, there might be some incompatibilities between it and Netscape. Netscape recommends using it's browser with Virtual Memory enabled under MacOS 8.

Also, set your Disc Cache to 1024k in your Memory Control Panel. Netscape is sensitive to a low cache setting. If Java is causing the problem, switch to Apple Runtime version. It can be downloaded at www.apple.com.

Check your Extension Folder for the OSL Lib extension; Netscape has a habit of installing this, It is not need under MacOS 8 and could cause problems if not removed.

If the freezing still occurs, even after trying all the above, you may want to download the Netscape Defrost extension. This patches a bug that causes Netscape to sometimes freeze. The author claims it works under MacOS 8 too. Go to http://www.macfixit.com/library/tul/...efrost.sit.hqx to get it.
