TICKET ARCHIVE -> Print From Mac G3, Os X 10.4 to Print Server

System of two PCs (Win 2000) and one MAC OS X Tiger. are on a wired Router and a wired PrintServer [PSv] Linksys PSUS4.
The PCs print OK on the USB to the Printer, A Samsung ML-1740.
The MAC is probably correctly configured with the
IP Addres for the PSvv and Print Sharing enabled.

But, "
Print jobs sent to that IP as generic postscript, just vanish- no error, no output.
I would have expected raw postscript output...."

This was discussed by BRIAN in a July 10, 2005 Post, with a helpful answer directing him to dowload some files:
"Install the Samsung-gdi package:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/samsung-gdi/
Install this slightly newer ESP ghostscript:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/foomatic/
ADD it as an LPR printer, including entering the Belkin-specific queue name of lp1 for port one or lp2 for port two."

The differences are, I have a wired PSV, a Linksys PSUS4.

Should this also work on my system?
- Samsung tell me they don't syupport setups for a Network, that the ML-1740 is not a CUPS,Postscript compatible printer.
- Apple (Local Genius Desk) suggest that the ML-1740 probably is not compatible.

The Ml-1740 prints from the MAC, but then the PCs cannot send print jobs vis the PSv. -> Error. Not ready.
After spending 12 hours on this over some days, I am almost ready to give up, until I saw Brian's post and the apparent solution.
{I have not downloaded the files suggested, because there were some other differences.
The ML-1740 now shows up as a printer on the configuration of the MAC's Print&Fax screen - but as a Generic PS printer, which it is not.

Solutions??

The secret to all network and Windows printing on OS X is to have CUPS drivers. Postscript printers just need a PPD, because postscript is the native output of OS X. The install instructions you posted were from me originally. If it worked for his 1740, it will work for yours. Don't forget that you need to know the internal queue name on your print server. It's part of the routing that gets data to the printer - and has to be entered in Printer Setup for the IP > LPD or IP > IPP protocols.

Thanks very much.
Please verify:
What is the Internal Queue Name? Is it the IP Address of the Print Server?
I assume that this IP address is to be set up in the MAC's Printer& Fax Screen. I had given it a fixed IP = 192.168.1.78
as suggested by Linksys.
IP > LPD = means?
IP > IPP = Internet Print Protocal.

Note: Samsung maintains that the ML-1740 does not support PostSript. I had sent them the Question and answer quoted,
but they di not think it would work.
I will give it a try.

I had spent so much time on this I wanted to get some reassurance.

Additonal Reply [2]:
It just dawned on me:
Did your message mean that those items were to be installed on the PCs and have the Printer directly connected to the MAC??
With the printer on the MAC, it prints from the MAC but not from the PC. The reverse is also true- the PCs print ok but the MAC's output does not make it because it is PostScript to to a Non-PostScript ML-1740.

The device queue name is used by the print server to route data to the printer. Windows users never know about queue name because the Windows setup software enters it for you.
I just looked up the queue name for PSUS4 and it is lp (lowercase LP).

The drivers I listed are for OS X.

LPD = line printer daemon (also called LPR = line printer)

I suggest you also read about CUPS:
http://localhost:631/documentation.html/

Thanks again for the information.
I have downloaded and installed on the MAC G3, OSX 10.4
ESP Ghostscript 7.05.5, which is required for
Samsung-gdi and
Foomatic-rip 3.43.2.9.pcc.dmg

Then installed the PrintServer [PSv] again:
Protocol: LPD (showed as a choice, also IPP,,)
Add: 192.168.1.78 (fixed IP address)
Queue: lp
location:
Print using: ML-1740
also tried ML-1220 + foomatic+gdi (on the list).

Printed a document: sent successfully
No printer output.

Print&Fax Screen shows that Printer is in use, until I stop print jobs, when it goes to idle.
Start jobs:-> printer in use, but no output.

System Two PCs, MAC and PSv connected to Linksys NR041 4 port router. Printer connected to USB port.
(Everything RESET, so that all items show up on the DHCP Table.)

No Printer output.

Any other suggestions?

All computers and print server are in the 192.168.1 subnet?

(This shouldn't matter - I hoped you'd get the 7.07.1 version of ESP ghostscript from the second link)

For troubleshooting, try connecting by USB to the Mac and ADD the printer using the Samsung-gdi driver to see if it works.

The ML-1740 Printer worked on the MAC when connected to it directly via USB.
But then, the PCs would not print to it.
Have not tried printing from the PCs to the printer connected to the MAC since adding the files to the MAC.

The MAC saw the printer right away. Samsung also said it would work connected directly to either the MAC or the pC, but on both via the PrintServer

Gunther,
You misunderstand me - I want you to tell me if the new Samsung-gdi driver works when the printer is connected directly to the Mac.

Do you want to try printing from the PCs to the printer connected directly (USB) to the Mac? We could do that too.

If you want Windows computers to share the printer, they must be setup to use a postscript driver, like HP laserjet 6MP (as example).

With the ML-1740 connected directly to the MAC it prints without any of the programs/drivers installed .
I do not know how to tell whether I am printing with the Samsung-gdi driver or not. It worked without it.

Additional: The ML-1740 is not a postcript printer, thatis the trouble. Do the drivers that were installed change the language of the documents from PostScript to Samsungs?

Gunther,
All drivers for non-postscript printers translate postscript into the printer's language (the output of all Mac applications is postscript).

When you ADD a printer in Printer Setup, you choose which driver you want to use (or accept what OS X has chosen). Please ADD the printer using the Samsung-gdi open source driver that you've installed, so we can tell if the driver works.

Or, if you don't want me to help you, that's OK, too. I can send you back to the rest of the Techs for other ideas.

Quite the contrary. You have been of enormous help !!
After Downloading ESP Ghostscript 7.07.1, the operation was a success and the MAC prints to the ML-1740 without any problem as of late last night.
You great advice and patience have led me through this maze of unknown terminology and practices. Thank you ever so much. I am most indebted to you.

My questions and comments were only based on my limited knowledge of the intricacies of the PostScript and printer languages and terms. While I have been on PCs for 23 years and managed to troubleshoot 98% of my problems, this one had me stymied because of unfamiliarity with specs and terms.
I looked up most of themon the Internet.

I took notes of everything I did and will put them together and send them to Linksys and Samsung, so they can actually help the next person who writes for assistance.

It is really wonderful to find someone so knowledgable and helpful on this Internet forum.
Thanks, barely expresses my gratitude.

I have edited our exchanges and sent them to Samsung and Linksys Support. Perhaps they will learn and help the next
person who needs help.
I will also tell the fellows at the Apple Genius Bar in Palo Alto who do use the MACOSX.com site for help.
