I need to set up, configure, etc. an HP Print Server 175X in order for the HP 1500L Laserjet to be compatible with OS10.3.9. I have not a clue how to set this up and HP has NOT been any help. I need a step by step from someone who understands MAC. As example, must I establish some kind of IP address and if so, how do I do that?
(I have tried HP's website, etc. with not much success) Thank you for your assistance.

Hi,
I'm Greg, your Volunteer Tech. I sincerely enjoy helping people set up their Mac so they can enjoy using it. I try, through a series of short interactions with you, to get enough information to help you. Please don't expect me to solve the problem without giving me more info or not telling me when I haven't yet fixed the problem.
David,
I wonder if HP couldn't help because they know it won't work with their driver? The majority of non-postscript printer drivers for OS X can't do network printing because they bypass CUPS, the unix print system that underlies the Printer Setup Utility. In these cases, you get only the comm protocol that is written into the driver -- USB.
So, for a network driver you need to install foomatic and ESP ghost script from:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/foomatic/
and get the PPD from:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr..._LaserJet_1500
To set up the 175x (I don't have that model, I have a JetDirect EX Plus):
I would try the OS 9-version HP LaserJet Utility (installed with OS 9/Classic drivers). You can set IP address from that. OR, if you know a previous IP address for the 175x, try the Terminal command "telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx." That will allow you to set a new address.
OR, Use a PC and HP's Web JetAdmin software (free standalone download). You will need to set an IP address in the same subnet, but away from the computer and router addresses. (ie, router 192.168.0.1, computer 192.168.0.10, 175x should be 192.168.0.200.
Do you have any docs for the 175x?
I'm sure I haven't answered all your questions. Please look into the things I have shown you, and come back with specific questions so I can better help you.

Hello Greg, Thank you for your response. I did contact HP. They sent me the JetDirect 175X to address the compatability problem with 10.3.9 and HP 1500L Laserjet. I have since found complaints all over the net and not one that explains the set up of the jet Direct that I need to configure.
I actually got close with the following instructions from
http://www.caewisc.edu/site/public/?title=osxjetdirect
The missing info is the "printer address" asked in #7, and the specific HP printer 1500 is NOT listed in the HP printer list.
So I need someone who has identified exactly what settings to set including a substutute printer from the list of HP printers. It appears that HP is not addressing the compatiblity problem based upon the number of complaints and the level of response from HP. Any insite you may offer wouid be appreciated.

I want to be very honest with you, David.
It appears from what you have said that you think there is some magic bullet out there ("exactly what settings to set"). What I'm asking here is that you work with me a bit, to see if between us we can solve your issue.
If you'd like me to continue to help, please tell me a lot more about your network, router, computers, IP addresses, etc. Which method from those I listed are you/have you used to set the 175x's IP address?
gsahli - Aug 13, 2005 - 10:34 pm
I forgot to mention that you can find the current IP address by printing a JetDirect test page -- There is a button on the print Server for this - hold it for at least three seconds to get a response.

Hi Greg,
http://www.cae.wisc.edu/site/public/?title=osxjetdirect
This address is the closest I have come to a solution. I did print out the test page and received an IP Address of 0.0.0.0. I assume this is not a valid address. I also trid the address with no success.
I also downloaded the ESP ghost script and foomatic as you recommended. Have not had any success in making my printer work with the jet direct with the downloads.
Any other suggestions you may offer to establish the "pribter address" #7 and how to get the correct 1500L model in the HP examples?
Thank you,
David

By the way, I received no docs with the JetDirect.
gsahli - Aug 14, 2005 - 5:17 pm
OK, good, you've installed the hpijs + ghostscript.
Well, let's try that IP address and change it to one in your local Network subnet.
Hmm, I really need to know a little about your network - or are you trying to connect by ethernet directly to the print server?
To decide what IP address to set the JetDirect to, you find your computer's IP address (usually in the 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.0.xxx.xxx ranges when you are using a router) from Network Prefs. If your computer is 192.168.0.10, for example, set the printer to 192.168.0.200. No hard fast rule here, we just want the printer away from the computer and router's addresses, in the same subnet.
Open the Terminal (in Applications>Utilities). Type:
telnet 0.0.0.0
This should bring a response like:
Connected to 192.168.200.9.
Escape character is '^]'.
HP JetDirect
Please type "?" for HELP, or "/" for current settings
Can you get to that point? If so type the simple command:
/
That should bring up something like:
===JetDirect Telnet Configuration===
Firmware Rev. : E.08.32
MAC Address : 00:60:b0:c6:ae:27
Config By : USER SPECIFIED
IP Address : 192.168.200.9

Default Gateway : 192.168.200.2

Set Cmnty Name : Not Specified
Host Name : NPIC6AE27
DHCP Config : Disabled

Please let me know if you get ths far. And cut and paste the results of the "/" command.

Greg,
I will attempt to follow your instructions and get back to you with the results. Did the address I sent open for you?
David
gsahli - Aug 14, 2005 - 7:24 pm
David,
Yes, that site will be useful once you have the IP address and your network set up.
Rolls - Aug 15, 2005 - 12:36 am
Hello Greg,
No luck.
network preference folder will not open. Can't find the computer's IP address, don't know where to find it, however did find an IP address under TCIP, tried that address with your instructions in the "terminal" under utilities, no luck. Also, subnet under TCIP was listed as 255.255.255.0 same as your last email.
#7 of instructions ask for he "printer address" in which I have yet to find, still have not a clue where to find it. Ypur instruction says to find computer IP address. Also, you have not given me any indication as to how to add or what to substitute to highlight for the HP printer in the printer list in the "ADD Printer" process. Remember the 1500 is not listed. Also, will this be wireless or do all cables need to be plugged in? They ARE plugged in now. Also, don't know how to get to symbols for "escape character is....
You have lost me in this process.
David
Your instructions are impressive if I knew what the heck I was doing. I apologize for my lack of understanding.
gsahli - Aug 15, 2005 - 10:05 am
The "printer IP address" means the IP address of the print server.
When you get to the point of selecting printer model, select "Other." This gives you a file selector dialog. You find and choose the file HP_Color_Laserjet_1500_foo2oak.ppd that you downloaded (above).
In System Preferences (in the dock), click on Network. under Built-in Ethernet TCP/IP you will find the computer's IP address. I would like to know that so I know if your computer is set up correctly.
In the terminal window, the telnet command is for connecting to the print server, so we can change the IP address of the print server. The escape character and 4-5 lines after is the response the print server sends back to us after the telnet connection begins.
Hope this will help.
Rolls - Aug 15, 2005 - 9:29 pm
Greg,
The computer address (I think) is 192.0.0.192.
The following I do not understand.
"In the terminal window, the telnet command is for connecting to the print server, so we can change the IP address of the print server. The escape character and 4-5 lines after is the response the print server sends back to us after the telnet connection begins."
I was able to list the 1500ppd that was downloaded. Was very interesting to find in the hardrive. I used the search and followed the paths to locate the item.
What's next?
Thanks,
D
Rolls - Aug 15, 2005 - 9:34 pm
I tried to print after following the above instructions and response.
I received the following messgae, "unable to retrieve workset from ppd:/private/etc/cups//_192.0.0.192-1.ppd
What does this mean? I thought I was close.
Thanks,
David

Greg,
HP says that the models listed are all Post Script. The 1500 is a host based printer.
What does this tell you?
David
gsahli - Aug 15, 2005 - 10:15 pm
David,
That IP address, 192.0.0.192 is not a local IP address.
HP says that the models listed are all Post Script. The 1500 is a host based printer.
What does this tell you?
Nothing I didn't know - host based drivers translate postscript in software before sending to the printer.
David,
I have concluded that you need hands-on help, which I can't give you in this context. Is there such help available in the city/town where you live?
Rolls - Aug 16, 2005 - 10:54 am
Greg,
The 1500 Laserjet printer is a host based. Your instructions are bent towards post script printers. This is why a ppd will not add to the connection success of the 1500 HP Laserjet through the jetDiect.
The magic bullet is finding someone who already addressed this problem between OS 10.3.9 and above with HP printers that are not compatible. HP did tell me that other printers have the same problem(s).
Rather than paying an IT person to solve this locally, it would be less stress and cost effective to dump the existing printer and upgrade the printer to the 2550L (post script) or a Samsung Laserjet that I have begun to research.
I just do not have any desire to reinvent the wheel again.
I appreciate your attempt to assist. Do you have any associates that may be able to jump in who may have had some prior experience specifically with this issue?
David

Hi David,
I'm going to send you back to the rest of the Volunteers. I hope someone can help you.
The hpijs and ESP ghostscript drivers I pointed out to you from the very start are host-based drivers.
It will be very important for you to explain to the next volunteer what your network is. This issue is completely about your network setup and settings. The driver part is completely taken care of by hpijs and ESP ghostscript.
Best wishes.

Thank you Greg,
HP says that ppd's are post script. I don't mean to be challenging but the frustration of this rises when instructions and explanations become contradictory.
I really appreciate your assistance and forwarding to the others my issue.
Best wishes to you, too.
David

Hi Greg,
I called AppleCare who walked through the discussion link on the Apple website and there was your name, all over the place. The AppleCare person suggested I attach the USB plug directly to the Airport Express and set up the HP 1500L printer with rendevous.
So far, 2 attempts to print have been successful. Hopefully no need for a router and more expense.
Thanks again for your assistance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
David
