I have recently bought a Netgear PS121 and a Canon MP830. I have gotten the printer working on one of my 2 windows machines however I cannot get the print server working on my MacBook Pro.

How could I go about getting this setup working?

Thanks.

Kevin,
Network printing/Windows printing only works with a driver that was meant for network printing. To use the OS X built-in CUPS network choices, you need a CUPS driver. For postscript printers, it's not an issue, because postscript is the native output of OS X, and can easily be routed to the various choices in Printer Setup.
Non-postscript printers are Very Different. Except for Brother, no manufacturer has provided CUPS drivers. Instead, what you get are Carbonized, OS9 legacy drivers, that have the comm protocol written into the driver (mostly USB). They can only print via local connection.
**Exception - when printing via an Airport/Bonjour enabled print server, where the software does a port redirection, USB output from the Mac gets routed to the USB port on Airport Express/Extreme.

The only CUPS drivers I know of for newer Canons is from www.printfab.net.

Then, after you have the driver, to setup for the print server you need to carefully read the (print server) manual to decide which protocol(s) are supported and then enter the right info into Printer Setup. The IPP and LPD protocols both require a device-specific queue name (also called port name), which should be in the manual. HP Jetdirect doesn't use queue name. Common queue names are L1, lp, P1 etc.

Unfortunately it seems that my printer (Canon MP830) isn't officially supported by these drivers you have recommended. Would using these drivers give me atleast partial support for this printer or would I be best off waiting for a version of these drivers that support my printer?

Thanks,
-Kevin

I suggest you contact the developers, to see if they can add your model.

Good luck.

Thanks for your assistance in this problem. I have managed to get this working.

Would you happen to know of any open source or free CUPS drivers for OS X?

Thanks,
-Kevin

In addition to Brother, here are ALL the CUPS drivers I know of for OS X:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/
http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...?group_id=1537
http://www.printfab.net
http://www.easysw.com/printpro/

(Canon and Lexmark are not well supported)
