I can not get my mac (osx 10.3.9) to print to my HP1012 printer via our psus4 print server. It recognizes the printer via appletalk, but when I try to print to it it prints a page that says "unsupported personality:PCL"

I used to have the hp printer connected directly to my mac via usb and it printed just fine - so I know the mac and hp work together. The printer server is supposed to support mac osx as well....I can't figure it out.

help!

our print server is connected to our wireless router, which we have the mac and a pc laptop connected to.

You have two issues going on at once:

Driver:
The driver provided by HP was written to support USB connection Only. To use the network printing protocols in OS X, you need to have a driver that works with the CUPS system (CUPS is the printing system in OS X). Install hpijs and ESP ghostscript from:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/

Print Server Setup:
You can continue to use appletalk, or, if you want to use IP printing, be sure to enter both the IP address and the print server's queue name in Printer Setup. You can find the queue name in the manual for the print server. It should be something simple like L1 or lp or P1.

Thank you for your help. I followed your instructions, which looked promising, but I'm still getting the "unsupported personality:PCL". any clues?

I tried via appletalk and IP printing...although I'm not 100% sure if I configured the IP printing quite right. It's definitely recognizing the printer, just not printing the text. Driver issue? help!

I have read that others have this same issue:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...-LaserJet_1012

Since I don't have that printer, I have no way to experiment. I would check with HP to see if there is a firmware update.
Or search for another CUPS driver - the only way to solve this is to have a working CUPS driver.

other CUPS driver sources:

Good luck.

I haven't been able to get any of the solutions to work...the details given on the last links provided by gsahli look promising, but they are way over my technical abilities. If someone can give me very explicit instructions on what to try next that would be great! otherwise, I'm going to have to live with a direct connect printer (my only other option currently).
