I have an HP photosmart 7960 printer directly attached to my G4 by USB cable which has been working fine with printer driver 2.5.5 until I tried to download the V 3.0 update for the printer driver. Now it will not print at all.
The download off the internet was successful except for the very last stage in the "HP Setup Assistant" when I got an error icon with no further info on what the problem was. I can print test sheets OK but when I try to print a document and select "start printing" in the utility window it immediately goes to "stopped printing".
My Mac is running OS 10.3.9; I disabled my Norton antivirus before downloading; I tried uninstalling and reinstalling as well as going back to the original CD for the printer and installing the update on it; I am an intermediate level user.
Any suggestions to solve the problem?

Philip,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. Your set up sounds exactly like mine down to the exact printer model.
What you need to do is remove all of HPs drivers. You will need Printer Setup Repair 4.2.1.
http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/psr/
Once downloaded, have it remove all the drivers, preferences, etc.
Now download the HP 2.7 driver here:

Then follow the installation prompts.

I am finally up and running again though in a round about way. I followed your advice about removing the old drivers with "printer setup repair 4.2.1". I then tried to download HP 2.7 driver but it was greyed out and was not available. However, 2.7.1 did download OK. But then the computer said the driver was missing even though it recognized a new driver was present. So next I reinstalled the driver from my original CD and got the printer up and running again. Perhaps the 2.7.1 was just an update and not a full driver? Actually, I am not sure it is really installed and I may just be running on the original V 2.2.5!
Anyway, thanks again for all your help. As long as the current arrangment continues to work I don't think I will mess with trying to update again.
Cheers,
Philip

Philip,
I am glad you are back to printing. I wonder what happened to that version 3.0 driver, as I never did find it when doing a search.
In any case, I would not download from HP any updates unless you have a problem printing.
If you update to Tiger, the updated HP drivers are on the DVD.

Its on the main website of HP. Its the only one they offer there. No mention is made of 2.7.

I seem to remember the info came to me as an update notification from HP. I agree, updating to Tiger is probably the easiest way to handle this sort of situation in the future.

Philip,
I get many emails from HP about updated drivers, but since my machines are working fine, I do not bother. The old if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
You are back to printing and that is all that matters right now.
