Both the Gutenprint and the HPIJS drivers do not fix the issue that printer is recognized and Mac sends but I never get any further than 'GenericClass: waiting for device'. Thanks for any help!

Paul, tell me how the printer is connected and what protocol you used in Print & fax (or Printer Setup - what OS X version?) to setup.

Hope this answers it. Printer connected physically via USB cable. 10.5.2 Mac OS X version. The Foomatic/HPIJS as well as the Gutenprint drivers for the K80 only give the Generic Class call, no more. Not sure what you mean by Printer Setup. Thanks, Paul.

Printer Setup Utility was the program that did most of the Print & Fax work in OS X 10.4 and 10.3 - they have now rolled it all up in Print & Fax preferences.
Just checking here - did you also install Ghostscript? hpijs needs that.

I'm a bit worried that I can't help - the K80 is one of the models that HP used non-standard USB on...
I don't know if "usbtb" will work on Leopard, but try it:

Yes Ghostprint, as well as usbtb installed, but same result. Afraid I am looking at a new Mac / compatible printer, as it seems we are out of options. Sad though as the HP normally does well, with my old Windows machine that is. If you have a last resort please let me know. Appreciate the help! Strange is that Mac recognises printer, can even tell toner status correctly (I placed new ones, which did not help either). For some reason, it does not seem to get actual printer commands over with matching results- frustrating!

There is no other method than the usb connection, is there....

I don't have a K80 to look at - does it have a parallel connector? If so, you can get a USB to parallel adapter cable. $15-30. Most of them work with Macs. Avoid ones that have a driver CD, because the driver is nearly always Windows only. (Ones that talk normal USB on the Mac end don't need a Mac USB driver.)

Another idea - have you looked on the HP forums for an answer?

YES! The parallel-USB cable did the trick. Very greatful..

That's good news.
