Description:
Powerbook won't recognize printer or vice versa. We have StyleWriter II printers at each of two residences. When reconnecting Powerbook to printer at home recently, we lost ability of computer to identify printer. Tried reconnecting cables with everything off. Tried reinstalling printer operating software. Chooser set to Stylewriter 1200 with background printing and Apple Share both off. When trying to print, we get message to check print monitor because of ID problem.

What else can we try?

Dear cperry2,

First, try zapping your PRAM. Upon startup, hold down Option-Command-P-R. Let it chimes five times to completely clear out the port.

Next, trash your PrintMonitor preference files and disable Desktop printing.

If you are using Localtalk, make sure AppleTalk is inactive and you have the printer connected to the modem port. The PowerBook really has only one serial port and the modem port is it. You need to use the Appletalk control panel to turn off Appletalk; don't just simply disable it in the Chooser.
