Printer error in all applications. Have checked printer set up utility, hired MAC IT support on site and no answers as to why the printer prints from one MAC and not the other. Any suggestions as to what to check next?

thanks

Portland welcome on macosx.com

(1) could you give more details on the machine on which print fails: which kind of machine ? Which OS
And on the only one on which it works ?

(2) Which printer brand+model does create problems ?
is it a simple printer or a all-in-one ? if all-in-one, do the other capabilities (scanning, ..) work fine ?

(3) Is the printer directly connected to the macs or through a server ?

(4) Did you browse the constructor website if an updated driver does not exist for this printer ?

(5) do you try, on a culprit mac, to remove the printer from the printer setup utility, then "Add" it again, therefore forcing the system to discover the printer ?

(6) Could you try to repair permissions
(must be admin)
Launch Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility
On the left pane, select the drive
On the right, select the First Aid (or SOS) tab
Then click on repair permissions and let run; don not worry about messages like " new permissions...."
Quit DiskUtility
Shutdown and reboot

PG; I've downloaded that but it needs the administrator password and my G4 which only has one user - me - and one adminstrator password, no other user passwords will not recognise the password! I cannot change the password because I neither of the 2 sets of MAC OS X discs work on this machine

Sorry, cannot well understand your last answer..

Do you lost the admin password ?
What had you want to tell me about the the 2 sets of discs ???

No I don't think I've lost the password. My system just doesn't respond to the password, when it requests it. For example when I go to install a download like fixamac and it asks for the administrator password and I enter it, it gives me an error message. The same with OS system updates i get the same error message. Its as if it doesn't recognise it.

I understand that the only way to change the administrator password is to re-install OS X. But I have two sets of OS x discs one I thought was for the G4 desktop and the other for the G4 powerbook and neither work on the G4 desktop.

No, you can sipmy reset the admin password following this guide
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106156

No, the G4 powerbook discs will not work on the desktop, but the G4 desktop ones should work..or these discs are not G4 but another desktop (imac,..)??? Why do you run : jaguar, panther, tiger ?

PG: Okay I will follow that article but I still need to start the computer from the OS 10.3 discs which won't work. How do I get different discs that will work? I am running panther.

Portland,
Either you use the discs that came with the G4, either you use retail panther discs..you've to buy from the AppleStore, local Apple dealer or from ebay

Which discs came with the G4 ??

The discs that came with the G4 were OS 9.0. The three, OS 10.3 discs purchased for the OS X upgrade do not work

When you said

Right ?

When you said
> do not work

Right ?

PG: Yes, when the IT support I hired to come into my home/office to diagnose this printer problem tried to boot from them he said they were just 'hanging' and thought that they must be the wrong ones. But I presume they were the discs that were used to upgrade from OS 9.0, I didn't do the upgrade personally but why else would I have them? I was going to try them again right now but feel I should really back up my hard drive before I attempt to use one of them because I presume there is some risk involved in trying to boot up from them?
philippe99 - Aug 23, 2005 - 2:27 pm
image
image
No risk, I think..

So, try booting on these CDs (instert the #1) holding down the Option key, you'll see a background with (if any) the potential booting OS.

If the boot cannot arrive at this point or if you do not see anymore the CD in the potentially booting OS ->
(1) The CD drive isn't hooked up. Well, never face thi issue
(2) The CD isn't a full installer Panther CD, or it's a bad CD, or it's an real -but only- Upgrade CD.
(3) The firmware isn't up to date (though I'm doubtful this would cause a CD not to boot or show up in that screen)

Phillipe:

I did the back up and reset the administrator (root) password. I have tried to install the fixamac and it gain does not accpet the password. I get the following dialogue box:

Username - Portland
Password -

I entered the administrator password

I get a dialogue box saying its the wrong password.

So I tried a different software update and the same message.

Perhaps its the Username or Name I don't understand the difference. The name of the hard drive is Portland Desktop. I also tried this with the alternate software update and it did not accept this as a Name.

What is my username/name and perhaps it needs changing?

Many Thanks

So, your username (and admin username if you are the sole account) is 'portland' (in lower case)

> reset the administrator (root) password
The administrator is not the root.

3 level of privileges in Unix

1) simple user; can run programs, stored documents; can install programs for his personal use only
2) admin; "simple user" + can install programs for other accounts; can create/delete/modify accounts
3) root; "admin" + can modify the system; all the power
(I never had to ebabling it up to now on all the mac Osx systems I maintains.

I cannoy understand while you still face this password porblem after having reset the admin password ????
By mistake, is the Caps lock key not enabled ???

Could you follow this Apple article on how restting the password of an account ?

Philipe: > reset the administrator (root) password
The administrator is not the root.

PG; To understand this again, the reset option says "administrator (root)"
but actiualy they are not the same?

I will use the MAC instructions to reset the password again tomorrow am

Phillipe:

This is a summary of everything I have done or I ahve noticed that is diferent since your last e-mail.

1. On logging out there is now another "user" Other that was not there before I reset the password yesterday.

2. I reset the password again from the url you recommended and not that I did set the box yesterday to administrator (root) instead of selecting the name Portland. Today I followed the instructions and reset the password selecting the name.

3. I tested the new password on a software update but it is not accepted. So I changed the Portland which came up in the Name box to portland and tried the password again I get the same error message which reads " make sure you ahve permission to write to /private/tmp/501/temoraryItems/com.apple.softwareUpdate and then try again"

3. I tried the new password on fixamac and it accepted it I noticed that it had changed the username to portland where yesterday it said Portland. Now what do I run on fixamac please?

4. Now evertime I start entourage I get a prompt to enter the keychain password and the account password. I know the accout password but not the keychain password. How do stop this prompt everytime I open Entourage?

5. I ahve updated my permissions in Disk utility but it has made no difference to my password being acceptd by Software Updates

Portland,

(1) this is the guide for PrinterSetupRepair
http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/softw...5ug/index.html

(2)about Entourage and SoftwareUpdates, I've no idea why you password is not accepted. All acts as you're not the admin of the machine
When you reset the administrator password from the installation disk, the new password is also applied also to your keychain. That's why I cannot undertsand why Entourage ask you this
In Entourage do you have your emails, ... ?

On the Finder window, on the left pane, there is the icon of a home: that's your Home folder.
What is the name near this icon ?

About PSR: I never use it (even if I have it in my Applications folder) because I never had problem with my printers.
Bu this soft is widely used, so I do not think it has already damaged some machines.
I would try first the two buttons "SYSTEM USERS/VERIFICATION & REPAIR" and
"FILE PERMISSIONS, PRINTING RESET, BACKUP & RESTORE" to detect any problem.

Normally, the username (required in the installation process) is "portland". The Name of the user is Portland.
Yes, that's already confused me when I was on Panther.
That's why, when installing Tiger, I decided to set-up both my username and my Name to the same word.

So, does Entourga still ask for keychain password ?

Philippe

and by the way, Portland, never -never, never- change the name beside your Home icon on the Finder window left pane

"FILE PERMISSIONS, PRINTING RESET, BACKUP & RESTORE" to detect any problem.

PG; I have done that, twice. I get the following messages when trying to print:
1. Word - Word cannot print due to a problem with the current printer
2. Entourage - an arror occured while printing. Not enough memory
3. Safari - asked for key chain password. Entered admin password. It says it was incorrect. Pressed cancel. When trying to print error message - Pritn error while printing.

o, does Entourga still ask for keychain password ?

Yes, when opening the application

Portland, in the Apple link I gave you above, do you follow the advice to reset the admin account ?
Because, normally this will also reset the keychain password

On the other hand, the fact that PSR does not correct the problem seems to demonstrate that the problem is elsewhere in the System

When you install PSR, do you use Portland or portland as username ??

I'm a lit bit confused by this problem of password !

PG: The first time I reset the password I selected - admin(root) but the link says not to do this, to select the name and then change it. So the second time I did this.

On the other hand, the fact that PSR does not correct the problem seems to demonstrate that the problem is elsewhere in the System

When you install PSR, do you use Portland or portland as username ??

PG: The name is already set for you by PSR and you can't alter it. The first time I tried to activate it the anme was Portland, after I reset my password for the second time choosing the anme and not admin(root) as it says in the link the anme that PSR had was portland:

Well, Portland, I run out of idea on your problem; because of the two problems (password + printer), I cannot find, either in my personal records or on the Web, a way to find a solution or a workaround.

If it will be my own machine, I would backup everything (documents, emails,..) and then re-install Panther (Erase&Install) on the machine to restart from a good base. But this is the last ultimate solution.

I prefer to repool the question to see if some other tech has not a better idea.
If, let's say, afetr one or two weeks, no solution has been brought to you, consider the reinstallation as a valid alternative

If in the mean time, I find something, I will take back the ticket.

Regards
Philippe
