TICKET ARCHIVE -> Printing from Quark 6.5 to HP LaserJet 5100

Just wondering if anyone out there has a workaround for the printing issues Quark 6.5 is demonstrating . . . One of the tech reps at Quark had me change the setting from "binary" to "clean 8-bit" which helped one file with an Illustrator graphic and a colored PhotoShop .tif file separate properly. Another 11x17 file with two PhotoShop 8.5x11 grayscale graphics just flushed . . . although they print fine from 9.1 on an old G3 backup machine to the same HP LaserJet 5100 (32mb of memory) . . . I sent the Quark rep the two PhotoShop files for him to play with but haven't heard back from him.

One workaround I've been using is to bypass Quark altogether and print .pdfs from Acrobat 7.0, but that means more steps, and I'm already late for a tee time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Duke Burr

Howdy!

Not sure which OS X you're running but hp does have an update for Tiger here:

do you have any placed images in illustrator? when you place a graphic in quark with a placed image within it, Quark has major problems. Make sure you're not doing this and you should print okay.

Let me know if this helps.

Nathaniel,

Thanks for your response . . . my operating system is 10.4.3.

The Illustrator graphic does not have any placed or embedded PhotoShop bitmap images . . . and, as long as you change the Options - Output - Data to "Clean 8-bit" from "Binary", that document separates beautifully. It's the 11x17 document with the two 8.5x11 PhotoShop .eps half-tones that flush and won't print. Hopefully the hp update you mentioned above will correct that . . . I'll let you know. I am afraid to send a Quark doc with a PhotoShop DCS 2.0 file with spot colors in it to this hp . . . it'll probably explode!

Do you mean half tones or duotones?

Nathaniel,

They are regular .eps grayscale images, not duotones.

Two 8.5"x11" photoshop images in one document might be too much for your hp laser jet printer to handle. Ripping to pdf first might be your best, and only, option, as far as I can tell unless you get a print server or expand the memory on the hp printer.

Nathaniel,

Well, the plot thickens...I have discovered that this version of Quark 6.5 will NOT output ANY PhotoShop file that has the .eps extension (to my HP 5100) . . . however, if you add an Illustrator file along with a bitmap PhotoShop .tif image and change the Options tab setting from Data - "Binary" to "Clean 8-bit", it not only prints grayscale, but even separates spot colors beautifully.

...and...if I save the same grayscale 8.5x11 PhotoShop documents (refered to above) as PhotoShop .pdfs, they can be imported into the same Quark 11x17 document that previously would not print, and it prints fine! But even a single PhotoShop .tif file (or .eps) on a Quark document by itself will not print . . . it's definately a conundrum.

To further complicate matters, when I send the same files out to my service bureau for color-separated negs, they rip film to a Linotronic perfectly with no issues!

The crazy thing is, this new G5 is sitting right next to an old G3 with Quark 4.2, Illustrator 9.0 and PhotoShop 6.0 that print flawlessly to this same HP LaserJet 5100 (with 32mb ram).

Another issue I'm wrestling with is the output of PhotoShop DCS 2.0 (spot color) files. 6.5 will also not output those . . . and so far, I've not figured out how to save a DCS 2.0 file to .pdf.

If I can't solve these issues, I'll have to look for other solutions than Quark. I'm not just printing laser copies to my 5100, these are laser printing plates, the staple of my business!

Next stop for me is Indesign . . .

I didn't want to give you the hard sell, but Quark really sucks now. Go with InDesign! I switched two years ago and you would not believe how effortless printing and pdf creation has been. I make PDF/X-1a files and my printers love me for it. I thank you for the follow up information. Will help me help others with similar issues.

Shall I close this thread?

Yea . . . how long can you beat a dead horse?
Thanks for all your input.
