I have a very strange printing problem. My printer is an HP 2510 Photosmart connected to my LAN. I can print from any computer connected to the network (two iBooks and one PC) but I can't do it from my iMac (it did when I bought it three weeks ago, and then stopped).
I installed, de installed and re installed the printer many times. I can even run tests and diagnostics from the HP software but I can't print from any application .
Can you help me?
Alberto

Hello Alberto,
My name is Carolyn and I will try to assist you.
I just checked the HP site to make sure but yes their drivers are compatible with Intel based Macs but you must be running Tiger 10.4.4. Since you have an iMac that's so new I'm assuming you are up to date on your Software Updates. If you aren't sure which OS you are running on your iMac, click the Apple logo top left in your Menu then click, "About This Mac"... a pane will appear and tell you exactly which version you are running.
When you say you reinstalled the printer many times, are you talking about the drivers?
Can you tell me about your network setup please? You have two iBooks and one PC ... but how have you networked everything? Is your LAN wireless?
Get back to me with all the information you think relevant and we'll try and get your iMac to talk to it's friends
Carolyn :-)

HI Alberto,
I just thought of something. Have you tried connecting your iMac directly to the HP printer to see if it prints that way without being connected to your LAN?

Hi Carolyn. Thanks!
I am running OS X 10.4.6.
My LAN is a mix of wireless and wired, but both printer and the iMac are wired to the switch (a Cisco Catalyst 500)
The network can't be a problem if the other machines can see de printer and print over the same LAN.
I tried both wireless and wired mode for the printer. Nothing.
And, for instance, I can print a test page from the iMac using the HP software, which seems to indicate indicate that the link between the machine and the printer exists.
The iMac "sees" the printer otherwise could not install it.
No, I did not test the machine connected to the USB port because I do not want to disconnect the printer and bringing upstairs to the iMac. But as I said the iMac printed initially, then started printing blank pages and the nothing.
Strange isn't?

HI Alberto,
The fact that the iMac did work before and now doesn't is what is puzzling me. Have you installed any new software since then? Have you done any Mac Software Updates since?
Actually the network CAN be the problem even though other machines can see the printer over the LAN. Here's the thing... if you can disconnect EVERYTHING. Shut down the computers completely. Give them at least 15 minutes then reboot and reconnect your wire/wireless LAN.
Also, it can't hurt to Repair Permissions using Disk Utility. Disk Utility is in your Applications folder. Launch it, then select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left. Then click Repair Permissions. Sometimes ownership/permissions can get confused with networks. And it's good to run Disk Utility to Repair Permissions at least once a week on any Mac anyway. Cleans up a myriad of little bugs.
Try disconnecting, reconnecting, Disk Utility... Repair Permissions and reboot the iMac. See if that makes any difference.

Hey
Yes I disconnected everything, even the printer. I repaired permissions (I have Maccaroni installled, I guess you know it)
The only think I have installed is Parallels VM (I'm running XP). But the printer worked when I installed, I printed from inside a Windows application running on the XP OS.
Of course I tried to print with Parallels off when the problem began. Nothing happened.
Now I can open the printer page from my browser (address 192.168.1.91) and change settings, see level of black ink, etc).
But if I try to print, a little printer with a sign ! in red appears on the dock and says job stopped.
Strange ins't?.

And I forgot t tell you that I can scan...

Yes, I'm familiar with Macaroni but you need to Repair Permissions with Disk Utility anytime you are having a problem with a Mac.
Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for the HP?
Carolyn

Yes.ALl of the above. Permissions corrected with disk utility and reinstalled the drivers. Twice.
