Knowledge Level: Expert but stumped
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: 5215
RAM: 64meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1
Description:
At my home, I have a 5215 (all in one style) attached to Stylewriter 1200. Last week I experienced a series of crashes and situations where I could not even shut down the system.
Subsequently, I tested with Disk First Aid 8.2, and found nothing. I also rebuilt the desktop, and have since then had no problems other than a major printing problem.
Now when I go to print, I keep getting a message back that the Stylewriter is out of paper (it's not). I am then given the cancel/continue option. Selecting continue, I then get a message back that the Stylewriter has a smaller size paper loaded into it than is called for by the application. At this point, the only option is "cancel."
At no time do I ever here the Stylewriter "come alive" or go thru an internal check.
This happens in all applications. Of course, I double check to make sure that I have selected 8.4 by 11 paper in the page set ups.
This happens, too, even with the extensions manager set to 8.2 full only.
I went thru checking with First Aid again (nothing), rebuilding the desktop, and checking the ports with tech tools. (By the way, this problem happens with both the printer and modem ports.) I also tried zapping the pram and deleting the printing preferences file.
Finally, I tried deleting/reinstalling the Stylewriter software. Again, this had no effect.
Any suggestions???

The StyleWriter 1200 is an old printer.
What kind of paper are you using? Recommendation: use 16- to 24- pound paper (maximum 100 sheets)
Check the SyleWriter 1200 manual for other material guidelines.
Some things to try:
1) The printer may need to be reset. Turn it off, count to five and then turn it back on.
2) Deselect and then reselect the StyleWriter in the Chooser.
3) Turn off background printing and AppleTalk.
4) Trash the desktop printer icon. Then select the StyleWriter 1200 in the Chooser (a new desktop printer icon will be created).
5) Highlight the desktop printer icon on the desktop and increase the Printing Memory Requirements in "Get Info".
6) Shut down the computer, disconnect and unplug the Printer. Startup your mac with the printer disconnected. Then shut down, reconnect the Printer and reboot.
Try printing the desktop. Try printing out a test page: Press and hold down the StyleWriter power button until the error light (yellow) turns off. Release the button and wait for the test page to print.
Hopefully, one or more of the above suggestions will get your StyleWriter working.
