Description:
This question may be a real doozy, and if it's too far afield and you don't want to answer it, I"ll understand. It needs some background.

I run two printers off my 3400 -- an HP 4L laser and an HP 340 portable. The printer software (I have to use PowerPrint -- it allows MACs to print to HPs, but you must know that) has always been a little funny (like it doesnt' work sometimes, but all I have to do is first choose "GLobalfax" in the chooser, then my "4L" and everything fine again.
I hadn't used my HP 340 in quite some time and it's reallly acting funny, but my guess is that it's software because when it prints, it prints fine. (ALthought sometimes it 1. prints very slowly or 2. feels as though the ink cartridge is having trouble move across that bar).
Anyway, MY QUESTION: (And this is ONLY about the 340 -- the 4L is FINE) I can print any one page fine. It won't print a file longer than one page, though. At the bottom of that first page it drops a LOT of ink, then quits. If, however, I select each page individually (I have "background printing" on), no problem, it will print the entire file just fine (if sometimes very slowly).

What should I do? Should I thank my stars it works at all and I can eventually print the whole file and just keep selecting each page individually? Should I re-install the printer driver? Should I buy a new one?
As always, I'm enormously grateful for the help I get from No Wonder. THANKS. Ed

Hello Ed,

No question is a silly question. Let's face it, problems can happen to any of us and with the enormous mix of hardware and software combinations that exist worldwide it can be perplexing for all of us.

I am a little puzzled by your comment about having to access "Globalfax" in the Chooser. "Globalfax" should have nothing to do with any kind of printer. You should have icons for each printer that you have installed, in that chooser window. If you don't then the assumption that I have is that there must be something wrong with the software installation for the missing icon.

The icons for the printers that should be in your chooser are for the Print Drivers which are known also as Extensions and should therefore actually both be loaded in the Extensions Folder inside your System Folder. Please take a look and see if they are both there.

Now the term Globalfax sounds like you probably have Global Village fax software installed. Is that correct?

Please get back to me and I'll do my best to help you get straightened out.

Regards,

Frank Brunner
