I've got an HP printer which is shared from a PC box. I had it working beautifully before, but now am having problems.

Since I overhauled the PC and gave it a different network name, I deleted the previous version of the printer on my iBook and and tried to add it anew so print jobs would follow the right path. I can find the printer when I look for it through the "windows printing" area of the printer browser and it seems to add correctly, and I'm able to specify the right model. But when I print, I now get the message "NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED", followed by "Unable to connect ot SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds...ERROR: connection failed with error".

A few google searches indicated that this might be because the printer had been previously added in 10.3.X, but I don't think that was the case. Just to be sure, I tried adding the printer to an iMac running 10.3 but it got the same error.

I also made sure to enable sharing with Unix machines on the PC, but that madse no difference either. The username and ID on the PC are the same as on the iBook, just to be sure.

Thoughts?

Try two troubleshooting steps (on the Mac):
Go to Keychain access and delete any entry that seems to be related to the PC.

Go to Terminal and type this command:
smbclient -NL [IP address of the PC here]
Show me the output.

When you enable TCP/IP (unix) printing, that enables the IP > LPD protocol - did you try that from the Mac? (you have to enter the printer "shared name" from Windows as the queue name in Printer Setup.)

Deleted all keychain items that could possibly pertain to the PC box.

Terminal client results:

Jeffs-iBook:~ jeffbenroth$ smbclient -NL [192.168.1.7]
Connection to [192.168.1.7] failed

I'm okay by manually entering the address of the printer, but I'm not sure of the protocol for that address; I do know the IP of the computer and the name of the printer, but I'm not sure how to enter the path.

TIA for the help...

I found the reason for my printing problem; it puts back in my lap another issue I thought I had solved, but the fact remains that I have this one in hand.

The change that made the difference (and I'm a novice to the basics of TCP/IP, so bear with me) is that while I was previously using my router's DHCP server to assign IPs, this was making it more difficult to deploy VNC server software on the PCs that my mac VNC clients could find.

By assigning static IPs to the PC boxes I was able to remotely control the PCs from a mac, but apparently somehow this disables the printers. I have no idea where to lay blame on this one, so I guess I'm going to have to do some more reading on VNC to find another way to get my PCs under remote control.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my original problem. If you have any thoughts or suggestions on the VNC issue (or TCP/IP, if that's solvable), I'm all ears.

Best - JB

Your smbclient results indicate that nothing is shared. This can also mean you have the Windows firewall enabled.

If you want to try LPD protocol on the Mac - click ADD, click on IP printer (right side top of add dialog), select LPD, enter printer share name in Queue name space, enter PC's IP address, then select model.

Oh, we didn't talk about printer model - drivers for non-postscript HPs don't work for network printing.

I can't help with VNC issues.
