KNOWLEDGE LEVEL: Intermediate

PROBLEM: Software
COMPUTER TYPE: Epson
MODEL: PII 233
RAM: 32meg
OS VERSION: Windows 98
SERVICE PACK: None

DESCRIPTION:

Printer: EPSON Stylus color 740
Driver ver.4.5a
WIN98

Printer prints VERY slowly (long pauses) ever since installed a couple of weeks ago.

Gets back to normal if completely uninstalled from Control Panel and re-installed from disk, but reverts to slow printing (4-5 min per page) after rebooting.

Reinstalling Win98 at the advice of Epson’s support team did not solve the problem.

No conflicts shown in driver resources.
Windows generic printer (text only) prints normally.

Can anyone please help.

Thanks in advance

Nick

In quote marke below is Epson's answer to your question, it seems your chip is a little "slow" for the machine selected. Try scandisk and see if that works, it might be Epson's driver. Wait until they replace it with a new one.

Here are a few suggestions for increasing the printing speed:

Make sure your hard disk has a minimum of 30 - 50MB contiguous space available to spool the data to be printed. Run Scandisk to make sure there are no crosslinked files and then run Defrag to see if your hard disk needs to be defragmented.

If MicroWeave is selected, black ink printing is much slower than usual. (Color printing speed is only slightly affected by MicroWeave). Turn off MicroWeave to increase print speed. If you are printing in black ink, select MicroWeave only for presentation quality printing.

Other ways to speed up your printing include turning on High Speed mode, turning off Halftoning, printing in black ink instead of color, and printing at a lower resolution.

Your CPU speed, amount of system memory, application type, document type, and degree of hard disk fragmentation significantly affect printing speed. Make sure you are using the proper EPSON driver and disable "Use Print Manager" in Windows otherwise the print job will spool twice.

Leaving the paper selection lever in the envelope position may also reduce print speed. "
