Hi! I have a little problem down here and maybe you can help me, before I have to reinstall the os x. Recently the Software update from the update server from apple (securtity updates and so on) did abort all the time with the following message:
The update "" could not be verified and expanded correctly. Make sure you have permission to write to /private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate, then try again.
I did some research in the forum and found some hints, that something with the file permissions coulb be wrong, so I tried disc utiltiy, but it was not able to repair, unitl I replaced the basesystem.pkg from another computer with the same os x 10.3.9 software. Now the disc utility tells me:
Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Determining correct file permissions.
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util. New permissions are 33261
We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/jobs. New uid is 1
We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/spool. New uid is 1
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume
Permissions repair complete
But now, I'm still not able to download the updates and the disc utility always tells me the message above, so it seems like it does not repair the problem.
For me it seems like somehow the .pkg are damaged or deleted - I wonder how this can happen, as I did not access the receipts folder at all!
I would be thankful for any hint on how I can avoid reinstalling the os x software. Perhaps I can just copy all .pkg files from my other mac os x and paste it to the receipts directory?

You might try downloading and running the 10.3.9 Combo Updater directly from Apple's site, repairing permissions once more, then reboot, and try to run Software Update again for the security updates.
Click here to immediately start downloading the update from your browser:

Hi Mike,
thank you very much for your fast help! The problem itself stayed the same I'm afraid. I've downloaded the combo update, ran the installer, restarted because I had to, and when I've started the repair option in disc utility, the error message " "First Aid failed
"Disk Utility stopped repairing permissions on '(volume name)' because the following error was encountered: No valid packages""Error: No valid packages (-9997)" So I had another look into library / recepts, and again there was no basesystem.pkg, I copied in another time, and now it is the same problem as before, the updater tells me the update could not be verified and expanded correclty, and the disc utility is telling me: Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
The 10.3.9 update seemed to be installed correctly from cd.
Perhaps you have another idea?
Thanks for your help!
Cheers,
Tony

Hi Tony, I've tracked down an Apple support document on this. You can read it here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25704
According to that, however, it doesn't look good. It looks like you'll have to reinstall Panther to fix this.
How did this .pkg get removed?
It is generally not a good idea to remove anything from /Library/Receipts

Hi Mike,
yes, I think the only option will be to make a back up of the data and reinstall.
Regarding the basesystem.pkg - I really did not even now it exists before the problem occured, and I do not think that I've deleted it. I suppose it a) has been damaged during use (if this is possible, not sure about it), or it has been deleted, but I can't think about any way this could have happend, as I said, I've never been to the receipts directory before.
But again, thank you very much for your help. I think I have to see it from the positive side of things. Now I now a little bit more about the operating system I'm working with!
Thanks again & Cheers,
Tony

Before you reinstall, maybe it just got moved somehow.
Search your hard drive for BaseSystem.pkg
Maybe there is more than just the one that you had to manually put in the
"/Library/Receipts" folder

Hi Mike,
I have performed the reinstallation of OS X 10.3.5 and updated on 10.3.9 again. 'Took some hours, but now everything's running perfect again.#
Before that, I've not been able to find the BaseSystem.pkg more then once on my HD, so I think it had been deleted by accident.
Thanks again & Cheers,
Tony
