I'm using Mail version 1.3.11 (v622/623) on a G5 with OS X version 10.3.9.

I had a power outage when the machine was on and I am now having an intermitant problem with Mail.

When new mail arrives, iget the following message instead of the new email

"The message from Kathleen Rhodes concerning “Re: JHU Promo Analysis Reports” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."

If I quit out of mail and restart, I can read the message. And this keeps happening.

I thought that rebuilding the mailbox might help, but the option is "greyed out" and not available on the menu.

Any ideas?

Hello Stuart :-)

Sounds like your Mail preferences got corrupted when you lost power and it can happen.

Locate this file on your Mac: com.apple.mail.plist
Here is the path: MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences
Locate the com.apple.mail.plist file and drag it to the Trash, then empty the Trash. Run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions. Disk Utility is in your Applications>Utility folder. Launch Disk Utility, select the "MacintoshHD" in the panel on the left, then click Repair Permissions. This takes about 1 minute. Quit Disk Utility. Reboot your Mac and see if your Mac Mail is working properly again.

Post back and let me know if you need further assistance, and thank you for choose Macosx.com for your Mac tech support needs.

it seems t have worked, but I am now having a problem logging into my pop3 email account. The server is rejecting my password. Not sure if this is related to the fix to the original problem or not. But, I wasn't having any problem accessing the account until I made the fix.

Hi Stuart,

So your Mail application is running ok, but the server is rejecting your password? Is there a way to change your password????? That should do the trick.

I think I have fixed it. It looks like the mail account information was changed as a result of the fix. I had to go in and reenter and save the account information to get it to work again.

Now seems to be okay.

Hi Stuart,

Hello again! Stuart, have you checked your Mail Preferences since this problem began? Go to your .Mac account, log in, click Mail, then look to the right of the Address Book is the Mail Preference pane. Click that. Make sure all of your pop mail information is correct.

the problem has nothing to do with the .mac account. I access my work pop3 account at home and that is the account that is having the problem.

HI Stuart,

Would you mind terribly if I sent you ticket back to the open pool where more tech support people can help? I'm not able to assist you like I'd hoped, so let me know if that is OK?

Carolyn :-)

Hi Stuart

This is a known issue with Apple Mail, its termed "Overstuffed Mailbox"
Apple have a kbase article -
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25812

The best way to combat this is to keep your Inbox/Sent mailboxes fairly tidy in terms of number/sizes of messages.

I have seen this occur when the mailbox reaches a 1 or 2Gb file size.

There is quite a bit of disussion about this on the Apple forums-
