My document is simple - just words typed in directly with no formatting at all - but whenever I command-S, the application freezes, ie. that rainbow round thing comes up and never resolves. Why?

Hi Cheryl. It's 10.3.4. Thing is, I've never had problems until the past few weeks. When I restart and the recovered document comes up, it's still not possible to save, and it's the same for all new documents I create. Hope you can help

Jiawen,
The first thing to try is to delete the preference file of Word.
Quit Word if it is running.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences.
Locate and trash the com.microsoft.word.plist file.
Empty the trash.
Start Word and give it a test run.
If that does not correct the problem, locate your 10.3 OS CD and start up the computer with it. (insert CD, restart computer, immediately hold down the C key).
Do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility.
When Disk Utility opens, click on the second icon at the top left, then click on Repair Drive at the bottom right.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs, you will need to hit the Repair Disk button again. The object is to have it find all the problems and repair them. You may need to hit that button three of four times so that there is no reference to repairs made.
Once done, click on Repair Permissions - just for added insurance.
Now quit Disk Utility, restart the computer and give Word a test run.
