Problems with using an Apple Mac G3 running OS v9.1 using Netgear DG834? Wiresless Router to provide broadband connectivity via Tiscali.
I am having a major problem with this - this is now my second Netgear router that i have experienced exactly the same problem i.e. it does not seem to pick up an IP address or any connectivity.
All the green LEDs are on and the ADSL service is definetly active as is the router and yet....I cannot get online.
I have also checked the configuration of the router and the Apple both of which are set-up and configured as instructed by Tiscali.....and yet I still cannot get internet access.
Explorer shows an error page which says ... "the page you are looking for cannot be found .... please check your settings etc..."
When i plug a normal dial-up modem in the service works fine.
Also when i plugged the replacement netgear router in it actually worked okay for literally 30 seconds - 1 minute and then it dropped the connection and has not recovered since.
Any suggestions, ideas, recommendations etc
Has anyone experienced anything similar with these products and service?
Please advise as this is making me pull my hair out and is incredibly frustrating!!! I was recommended to Tiscali, Netgear and Apple and so far my experience is not one that I will be shouting about!!!
Please, please, please if anyone can help I would be appreciative.
Jon,
As you have connected to the net for a matter of seconds I presume you can access the routers set-up pages from your browser by typing
http://192.168.0.1
When you go into the set-up pages have a look at the "router status" screen. It should tell you that you are "connected" and at what speed you are connected at (eg 2272kb/s downstream if you have a 2Mb/s connection) along with other info. If everything looks right here I feel the problem is less likely to do with your mac or router. The fact you can see those pages suggests you mac and router are working well together.
If its possible to try your equipment on a friends ADSL line this could show for definite that your gear is fine - you will of course have to use your friends ISP login details. If you can do this it might be worth trying your friends router on your own line. A process of elimination.
There are lots of folk having problems with the net at the moment. My first gut feeling is to consider the ADSL service provided by BT and Tiscali. You must bear in mind that Tiscali is renowned for its shoddy customer service and the fact that BT are part of ADSL provision. You cannot communicate with BT though - its the wholesale division and they will only talk to Tiscali. If there is a problem with your line or connection with your telephone exchange then Tiscali have to tell BT to look in to this for you. In other words its probable that the only people who can help you is Tiscali!
Have you ever had ADSL working on your line?
Its not unusual to have your ISP and BT telling a customer that their line is fine when in fact it isn't!
What speed have you been provided? BT have been providing many folk with speeds that are too fast for their line which results in the symptoms you are experiencing. Sometimes BT can tweak the system for a cure but its not unusual that a speed downgrade is the only fix.
To be frank, I feel your best course of action is to badger Tiscali about this. They really should be able to help. They can do line tests and even do some checks on your equipment from "their end".
Its also worth looking at the Tiscali forums to see if there are other users with the same problem. Look here too (a very good website!)...

It is very common for issues to exist outside of your own system - don't feel too paranoid that its you thats done something wrong!
Feel free to get back to me for advice but I suggest you take a deep breath, sit in the call queue with the intolerable music and get talking to Tiscali.
regards
Tom
