I have a new MacBook Pro that is only a couple of months old, and I've had numerous problems with AOL Instant Messenger crashing on me. Also, sometimes when I go to open other applications the icon on the dock just bounces a couple of times and stops. If I wait a little bit, the application might open but sometimes it does not. I run Software Update on a weekly basis so I'm really confused as to what exactly is wrong.

Matt,

AOL has caused problems with many people. If you have already set up a user name with AOL, you can use Fire or Adium. Both are very good chat programs.

As for the other programs not opening, go to the Utilities folder and start up Disk Utility.
When that opens click on the second icon in the side bar at the left then click on Repair Permissions. (repair disk will be grayed out)
Do not worry about what happens in the activity screen.
When done, quit Disk Utility and give an application a test.

Let me know how you do.

Cheryl,

Thank you for your response. I tried repairing the disk permissions, but I am still unable to open certain apps. Any other ideas?

Matt,

Next is to locate your OS X 10.4 Install disk. Insert it in your MacBook.
Plug the power adaptor to the MacBook and a good working outlet.
Restart the book and immediately hold down the C key.
When it starts up with the Tiger disk, it will ask you to select your language.
Go ahead and select your language
Now do not click on the installer screen.
Instead go to the Utilities menu and select Disk Utility.
When that opens click on the second icon in the side bar at the left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom right.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs - you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time after the first pass is done. The object is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You may need to hit that button a third or fourth time to get no references to repairs made.

Now click on Repair Permissions.

When that is done, quit Disk Utility and restart the computer.

Now give it a test run.

What are programs that are giving your grief? Apple apps or others that you have installed? With your Intel MacBook, you need to be careful what programs you install and make sure they are universal. A PPC program may cause problems if installed on an Intel machine.

It could also be that the latest update for the OS (10.4.8) might have caused this. To correct this do the following:

Go to the Go Menu and select Computer.
Open Hard Drive
Open Library
Open Receipts
Locate and trash the MacOSXUpd10.4.8Intel.pkg
Empty the trash.
Now go here to download the Combo update
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...dateintel.html

Once downloaded, install it and follow the prompts.

When you have restarted the computer, go to Utilities and run Disk Utility to repair permissions.

Now give those programs a test run.

Keep me posted.

I just wanted to let you know that I'm not longer experiencing problems with programs crashing. Everything is working flawlessly! I'll keep this ticket open in case I experience anymore problems within the next couple of weeks. Thanks!

Matt,

Our system will automatically close the ticket after three days of nonactivity. When that happens, you can reopen the ticket to get back to me.

Hey Cheryl,

I started experiencing similar problems again. I tried booting from my install disc, but it did not work. I also did what you said to do about the last update for Mac OS X. I've noticed that this mainly happens when I have Firefox open, and when I close it the programs usually open without a problem (90% of the time). It's really starting to confuse / worry me because before my MacBook Pro, I had an iBook G4 and the last time it crashed on me, it was because I was unable to open any third-party programs. Any insight / suggestions would be awesome. Thanks.

Matt,

Usually when a program does not respond correctly, trashing the preference file will correct the issue. If all your programs give you a hassle, you should use Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Now, while Apple's Disk Utility can only repair certain things on your disk, you should have a third party utility like Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro.

Your MacBook Pro has an Intel processor and you must use programs that are labeled Intel or Universal. What version of FireFox are you using?
Firefox 2.0.0.1 is available for download and it is an Intel version.

Browsers do take up a lot of memory, and Firefox could be taking more than its share, especially if you have several add ons to it. Does this problem happen when you use Safari as your browser?
